Arrival Story:
Sophie's previous owner was a very elderly lady who took fabulous care of her, but just couldn't handle the energy of the herding breed. She surrendered Sophie to the vet for them to find her a home, asking them even if they put her down to lie and say she was ok. After no luck for a couple of months, my vet found out I was looking for a dog for my cousin who spent weeks on end alone. I took Sophie to my cousin who fell in love with her, but Soph had made up her mind she wanted to stay at my house. My cousin called me frantic because the dog had escaped and she caught up with her at the interstate. I brought her home and she has been here the 9 years since. I take photos to the vet to give to Sophie's former owner, because for the longest time she was broken hearted thinking they had really put Sophie down and were just telling her Sophie had a good home.

Bio:
Sophie has a genetic eye disease PRA. She started going blind at about 6 yrs of age, and is now totally blind. She also developed severe cataracts, but my vet and I agreed it isn't worth the anesthesia risk to remove cataracts from an already blind eye. Sophie has developed a moderate heart murmur in her "golden years", but she hasn't slowed down even a step! -- Update -- In October '08 Sophie's murmur was diagnosed as having worsened into atrial fibrillation - the top chambers of her heart quiver rather than pump.
