What's for our meal today???

Joey is fed a homemade RAW diet(prey model)

as of 4/5/08

RMB's == Raw Meaty Bones
and DO NOT drink tap water only purified water like rest of the family including the cats(we do the refills at Wal-mart).

Prey model -- 80 * 10 * 10
The "Prey model" diet attempts to simulate the proportions of an actual prey animal in a pet's diet. This includes organ meat, heads, skin, muscle, bone, blood and even small amounts of fur, feathers or scales, mimicking the amounts that would be consumed when eating small prey. Generally, the diet recommends 80% meat (including some 'meaty' organs such as heart), 10% bone and 10% organs (of which half is liver). Proponents of the whole prey model diet believe dogs and cats are carnivores and therefore there is no nutritional or dietary need for anything other than meat, bones, and organs. The supporters of the prey model also focus on feeding meats from a wide variety of animals for best nutrition.
Supplements are generally not used in a prey model diet although some followers do add fish oil to the diet to compensate for the reduced amount of omega-3 fatty acid in commercially raised grain-fed livestock.
** Joey gets Wild Alaskan Oil listed just below. **

I get the RAW for Joey - at a couple butcher shops and an oriental market.
After driving around to the shops around here and asking people I settled on a couple that I liked their selections & they also can order items in for me if not on hand.
They are where I get their ground meat... turkey, beef, buffalo, venison, elk, pork & their RMB's
Bone-In Goat Cubes, turkey necks/drumsticks, chicken parts(thighs, wings, legs & feet), whole chickens(cut to order), pork ribs, beef neck pieces, pork hocks & organs(chicken -- gizzards & livers AND beef -- liver, thymus"sweet breads" & kidneys).
:)
Joey & Shelby our Jack Russell Terriers *DO NOT* get the same RMB's as Griz our senior Belgian Sheepdog does.

THE FOLLOWING MENU WORKS *WELL* FOR "MY 3" canine kids -- they are healthy, strong & happy ==> they are thriving
My 3 get PRIMARILY RMB's w/ 2 days(M & F) of ground meat/organ w/ their "health mix". (sometimes including finely minced celery).

Joey does enjoy getting some reg. vanilla yogurt, apple slices and some orange.

Zukes has a LARGE selection of products, most of their products have a large line of ingredients(making it NOT a simple treat) and surgar. I have listed below and there are others in their line not listed here that have surgar(they don't identify it as surgar), but it is surgar.
Maple syrup, Blackstrap Molasses & Molasses are all surgar.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
**Zukes Hip Action**
Beef, Ground Rice, Ground Oats, Malted Barley, Gelatin, Maple Syrup, Vegetable Glycerin, Glucosamine Hydrochloride, Fresh Apples, Fresh Carrots, Canola Oil, Ground Flax Seed, Fresh Blueberries, Lecithin, Salt, Phosphoric Acid (a natural acidifier), Garlic Powder, Sorbic Acid (a preservative), Chondroitin Sulfate, Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), Manganese Sulfate, Zinc Sulfate, Sodium Selenite.
**SuperFood Organic Dog Biscuits**
Organic Ground Oats*, Organic Ground Barley*, Blueberries, Cranberries, Potatoes, Oat Fiber, Organic Blackstrap Molasses*, Oil Blend (sunflower, olive and canola), Beets, Raspberries, Cherries, Blackberries, Natural Vegetable Flavors.
**Jerky Naturals**
Beef, Ground Oats, Ground Rice, Ground Barley, Malted Barley, Molasses, Vegetable Glycerin, Gelatin, Blueberries, Ground Flax Seed, Apples, Carrots, Canola Oil, Natural Flavors, Garlic, Calcium Carbonate, Phosphoric Acid, salt, Sorbic Acid (a preservative), Vitamin A, Vitamin D3, Vitamin E, Vitamin B12, Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), Taurine, Copper Sulfate, Calcium Pantothenate, Manganous Oxide, Riboflavin (Vitamin B2), Niacin, Thiamine Mononitrate (Vitamin B1), pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), Folic Acid, Zinc Oxide, Ethylenediamne Dihydriodide (source of Iodine), Sodium Selenite (source of Selenium).
**Mini Bakes**
Ground Oats, Rice Bran, Peanut Butter, Blueberries, Potatoes, Oat Fiber, Blackstrap Molasses, Oil Blend (sunflower, olive and canola), Natural Vegetable Flavors
Bit O Luv also has surgar... dextrose(surgar derived from fruit) AND corn syrup
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
**Bit O Luv**
Beef, chicken, dextrose, water, corn syrup, soy protein, isolate, natural smoke flavor, salt potassium
Sorbate--preservative
Paprika, ??(cannot read from online page) & sodium
nitrate(a carcinagen that can also be found in hotdogs AND lunchmeat).
Walmart... I like Wal-mart for buying, groceries, clothes, etc. from, but NOT for the treats for my dogs.
No Grainers SOLD only at Wal-mart -- They do have an online page, but it does not list the ingredients of their treats. MAYBE it is the same high quality ingredients & YUMMMMY preservatives that goes into their ~Ol Roy~ dog food. I don't know I will have to check tomorrow(Jan. 8).
**Ol Roy dog food**
Ground yellow corn, soybean meal, ground whole wheat, corn syrup, poultry fat, Meat and bone meal (Animal Fat Preserved with BHA and Citric Acid), Chicken by-product Meal, Rice, Animal Digest, Salt, Calcium Carbonate, Potassium Chloride, Choline Chloride, Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Vitamin D and E Supplement, Niacin, Copper Sulafate, Manganous Oxide, Vitamin A Supplement, Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Thiamine Mononitrate, Meadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex Source of Vitamin K, Calcium Iodate, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Riboflavin Supplement, Cobalt Carbonate, Folic Acid, Sodium Selenite, Folic Acid
Meadione Sodium Bisulfite has been BANNED for use in over the counter (human) products because of it's high toxicity. It causes cytotoxicity in liver cells, causes hemolytic anemia and hyperbilirubinemia, considerably weakens the immune system, has possible mutagenic effects, & is directly toxic in high doses.
Now consider dogs are eating this stuff EVERY DAY and are constantly being exposed to all those nasties.
Do gs are omnivores???... NO silly humans vegies are for rabbits NOT for dogs!!!!!!
Corn, grains & vegies when digested breakdown to carbs/sugar(basic knowledge), a furkid has NO NEED for carbs/sugars or fiber nor do their bodies naturally have the tools to accurately digest corn & grains NO MATTER how they have been cooked or NOT COOKED. Furkids were made to get their energy from uncooked fats & proteins. Corns, grains, vegies AND cooked meats ARE EXTREMELY HARD on ALL furkids systems!
Mommies thoughts:
In conclusion it stands to reason that a RAW diet w/ plenty of chicken with it's bone(s), chicken gizzards and beef liver would help with arthritis/joint problems. Use CAUTION w/ liver DO NOT feed LOTS it is possible to overdose on liver. You wont find the nutrients needed to help alleviating arthritis in kibble, MANY of the nutrients in kibble are just sprayed on so the company can say the nutrients are there and sway you to buy it. RAW diet is BEST!!!
RAW Tripe and other organs ---
In an analysis of a sample of green tripe by a Woodson-Tenant Lab in Atlanta, Georgia, it was discovered that the calcium:phosphorous ratio is 1:1, the overall pH is on the acidic side which is better for digestion, protein is 15.1, fat 11.7 and it contained the essential fatty acids, Linoleic and Linolenic, in their recommended proportions. Also discovered, was the presence of Lactic Acid Bacteria. Lactic Acid Bacteria, also known as Lactobacillus Acidophilus, is the good intestinal bacteria. It is the main ingredient in probiotics.
Finally, because of it’s rubbery texture, serving it in large chunks also aids the canine in strengthening it’s jaw muscles and has an added benefit as a form of canine dental floss.
My mommies agenda behind this diary is to HELP spread awareness of the RAW diet((BEST furkid diet)), knowledge of supplementing in the RAW diet & the often misunderstood cute personalities of Jack Russell Terriers.
Taking dog guardianship seriously and responsibly. Solid information and opinion combined with common sense, questioning, learning, asking important questions.|| "If we know better, we do better." — Maya Angelou
The RAW pet food diet is NOT advertised...
"The majority of pet owners are happy to just feed brand-name, pre-made foods to their pets because it is convenient, easy, and their animals eat the food and appear to do well on it. They are part of the consumer society that swallows slick advertisements hook, line, and sinker. And if there is one thing pet food companies have down, it is advertising. They advertise all over the place: on TV, on the web, in hundreds of magazines, in schools, at dog shows (think of the Eukanuba Tournament of Champions; free bags of the sponsor's kibble are given to the winners at many dog shows.), at zoos, on billboards, and (most importantly) in your veterinarian's office (think of all those shelves filled with Purina foods, Hill's Science Diet, etc.). Raw feeding, however, has no such advertising capabilities, because people are supporting their local butchers, ranchers, farmers, etc., and are encouraging sustainable living practices rather than paying big bucks to make people buy some commercially-produced product. Raw feeding's advertising is through word-of-mouth and through the healthy dogs and cats that are fed such a diet".
What most consumers are unaware of is that the pet food industry is an extension of the human food industry... pet food provides a place for slaughterhouse waste and grains considered "unfit for human consumption" to be turned into profit.
But kibbled foods have come a long way since their early prototypes. They have improved much, and there are a number of smaller companies that produce holistic, organic, or premium kibbles from human grade ingredients that are of great quality as far as commercial foods go. The majority of pet owners are happy to just feed brand-name, pre-made foods to their pets because it is convenient, easy, and their animals eat the food and appear to do well on it. They are part of the consumer society that swallows slick advertisements hook, line, and sinker. And if there is one thing pet food companies have down, it is advertising. They advertise all over the place: on TV, on the web, in hundreds of magazines, in schools, at dog shows (think of the Eukanuba Tournament of Champions; free bags of the sponsor's kibble are given to the winners at many dog shows.), at zoos, on billboards, and (most importantly) in your veterinarian's office (think of all those shelves filled with Purina foods, Hill's Science Diet, etc.). Raw feeding, however, has no such advertising capabilities, because people are supporting their local butchers, ranchers, farmers, etc., and are encouraging sustainable living practices rather than paying big bucks to make people buy some commercially-produced product.
Raw feeding's advertising is through word-of-mouth and through the healthy dogs and cats that are fed such a diet.
"Raw-Natural diet for dogs, isn't and shouldn't be considered a "fad", the latest thing. It is not new at all but the rediscovered natural approach to providing the optimum canine appropriate diet".
"Vibrancy, vigor and optimum health for our canines is to be expected when feeding a natural, nutritional, raw diet. The true value of a natural raw diet is its ability to provide nutrition that goes the full distance from consumption to energy".
Softer, shinier coat
No doggy odor to their coat
Firmer, more muscled body that is not 'doughy' like their kibble-fed counterparts
(( 2 ))
Dog breath (rancidity and stinkiness may vary)
Stained teeth, tartar covered teeth, or teeth encrusted with calculus (that require brushing &/or dentals/cleanings)
Periodontal disease (85% of kibble-fed dogs over the age of 3 have this)
Itchy skin Doggy odor to coat (varies in intensity)
Body is too flaccid and may feel soft or 'doughy' to the touch, despite dog maintaining the proper weight
Large poops relative to body size that do not decompose quickly (softness and stinkiness may vary)
Small fatty benign tumors that thrive from the constant supply of sugars provided by all the carbohydrates in the diet.
Greasy feel to the coat (greasiness may vary), resulting in frequent (once a month or more) bathing
Premature aging caused by periodontal disease and immune system 'overload' (immune system is constantly working against the toxins pouring into the body from the mouth and is in a constant state of arousal).
REGARDING ARTHRITIS
******MSM... http://www.all-natural.com/msm.html
is a pure source of nutritional sulfur, an essential macronutrient that is often lacking in modern diets. Sulfur is the third most prevalent compound in the body after oxygen and hydrogen and plays an important role in the formation of strong, resilient cartilage, tendons and ligaments.
Taurine is a sulfur-containing amino acid formed from methionine. Taurine stabilizes cell membranes. Methionine contains sulfur, detoxifies cells, and is involved in pain relief.
Methionine, Cysteine & B6 together make Taurine
Mommies thoughts:
In conclusion it stands to reason that a diet w/ plenty of chicken with it's bone(s) and beef liver would help with arthritis/joint problems. Use CAUTION w/ liver DO NOT feed LOTS it is possible to overdose on liver. You wont find the nutrients needed to help alleviating arthritis in kibble, MANY of the nutrients in kibble are just sprayed on so the company can say the nutrients are there and sway you to buy it. RAW diet is BEST!!!
