Arrival Story: Puppy was a small Terrier/Schnauzer mix left in the brutal Arizona desert to die. I found him sitting outside the local watering hole one hot August day. The patrons were giving him water, but none willing to give him shelter. So I scooped his tired, crumbled body up into my arms and took him home. I couldn't imagine anyone abandoning such a loving little boy. When he became severely ill a couple of days later I realized his previous owners probably couldn't afford to fix him, and "letting him go" in the desert was all they could bring themselves to do. Puppy had serious issues, manifesting themselves in a variety of conditions, but the most immediate at the time was a blockage in his colon. It was benign, but had to be removed. He was on the mend, but not out of the woods. His little body, either due to his abandonment, neglect, or heredity, had developed several illnesses including diabetes, liver and kidney disease, and he had a small hole in his heart (a murmur). Over the seven years we had him, Dr. D. and I took care of Puppy, providing all the love, care, and medical attention we could. I remember times in Dr. D's care when she let me sit with Pups and times when she had to deliver the undelliverable. If it were not for our Dr. D. I would not have had the strength to do what it took to keep Pups alive.
I've asked myself what made Puppy so special. It wasn't his unconditional love, many dog owners agree, that is ubiquitous to the species. I think it is what Puppy represented. Puppy overcame such adversity, more than most animals or people could endure; yet he went on just to see another day, another day with me, because he knew I needed him, more than he needed me. He represented the hope, strength, and kindness that I couldn't muster within myself.
On October 22, 2007, Puppy's worsening heart disease, brought on by a small hole in his heart, finally took him away from me. As it turned out, Puppy healed the holes in my heart, over and over, every day we were together, but I couldn't heal his, not the physical one anyway. I like to believe I did heal other holes though, those left by cruel, unthinking actions and loss. I was wrong about Puppy, I thought he wasn't the right dog for me when I found him, not big enough or strong enough, I didn't think we were a good fit, I didn't think he could change me, but he did, forever.

As a tribute to your loss

What we know: BORN: Approximately August, 1995.
FIRST WORDS SPOKEN BETEEN MOM AND PUPS: "You are not going to be Coyote food, not on my watch."
SPECIAL QUALITIES: Extremely resilient, determined and courageous. Bounced back from a rare canine colonoscopy to live a full 7 years, fought Cushings disease, diabetes, chronic liver and kidney disease and managed complications due to a heart murmur.
EARLY YEARS: This is uncertain as Pups was approximately 5 when he came into our lives. From initial appearance and his behavior, Pups was likely neglected.
JOBS HELD: Construction Pups while we built our house and Mentor Pups when we brought a new dog into the family. He had a distinguished carreer as our guide and companion on many hikes and walks into the mountatins (he always had to be head of the pack) and as our barometer on how we were doing because everything we did and felt, he did and felt too. Most of all, Pups dug holes, whether we needed it or not!
MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Proving size does NOT matter, having the cutest Terrier derriere EVER, best friend to Harley, and sharing an unspeakable love with his mom thing and his dad.
PASSED ON: October 22, 2007 after his long battle with a variety of complications, ultimately his little heart just gave out.
SURVIVORS: Mom and dad, Little Grandma, Harley, Bud, BG.
LAST WORDS SPOKEN BETWEEN MOM AND PUPS: Our favorite song - "Good morning Starshine, Earth says, hello, You twinkle above us, we twinkle below. Good night my Pups, see you soon."
