Arrival Story:
My parents had a fantastic doberman when I was a baby and after hearing their stories about Mac, I've wanted a doberman for years. My uncle is a veterinarian who knows a lot of good breeders and when the time was right, I put in an order and he picked me out the best dog of the litter! I was interviewing for jobs when Bryher arrived so his first stop was my parents' house where he played with his step-sister Shadow (see Bryher's family below) for a couple of days. I flew down to pick him up and flew back from Kentucky with him. (Unfortunately it was a very bad experience for him and I would advise everyone to think twice before flying their dog, especially on Delta.) He lived with me in Ithaca, NY until I moved to Chicago and he is learning to be a city dog. We just moved again within Chicago and now we're in a loft with a lot of open space and sunlight, which he seems to like. He goes to doggy daycare almost daily because now both of his humans are working full time. Doggy daycare is good for working off energy and keeping him from getting bored, but he is always watching the door by the time we arrive and he gets very excited when he sees us every evening.

Although his parents were show dogs, I am not showing Bryher. I decided to leave his ears floppy rather than crop them. Isn't he cuter that way? When he was only a few months old we got our first cat, Tobin, because we were afraid if he didn't live with a cat when he was young he would develop a prey drive that would not allow us to get a cat for his whole life. Tobin and Bryher interacted occasionally, but when we got Buttercup, who refused to stay in "cat territory" with Tobin if her humans were in "dog territory," Bryher truly learned to share his space and now all three animals live in the entire apartment, rather than staying in their own areas, which is much better from our perspective.

My best friend!

I know my human is supposed to be my best friend, but my "sister" Umbra is definitely my best friend! Sorry Mom! Unfortunately she may be moving away soon since the second human in my house is probably moving out, which makes me super sad. I would even let her take away my rawhide bone if it meant she would get to stay! At least Mom promises we'll still hang out and play together a lot.

Are my humans trying to replace me???

There's been a new addition to the family - a 5-month-old German Shepherd named Umbra. Now as a general rule I love other dogs, but I'm not terribly fond of puppies. Nonetheless, I've been trying to be patient with my new little "sister." I let her lay beside me on my bed, eat out of my old bowl, and even play with some of my toys. It really irritates me, however, when she tries to take my bone away from me as I chew it. I growl at her and bare my teeth a little. This worked for the first few days. Unfortunately she recently discovered that my bark is worse than my bite and if she ignores the growl and takes the bone anyway I just look up at Mom and give her a pleading look like, "Why did she take my bone? I like my bone." At least she's starting to be kind of fun to play with. At first I play bowed a lot and growled to invite her to play, but she was scared and ran away. Now she runs around with me! Although she doesn't seem to like my method of playing, which involves putting her whole head in my mouth (but not biting down - I'm a good boy!). Anyway, the jury is still out about Umbra. She has potential... as long as my humans still love me just as much!

My new home

I came back up to Chicago with Mom after Thanksgiving. I was sad to leave the farm, but glad to be living with Mom again. The new apartment isn't as big as our old condo, but it's nice anyway. Mom has a giant beanbag chair in the living room that she lets me lay on with her. She also has a "special friend" who is over almost all the time and who loves me and I love her. She takes me on long walks and gives me treats, but sadly she's not a pushover and won't let me misbehave when I'm with her. Darn it! It's been a full time job trying to pee on all of the trees in my new 'hood. Whew. Gotta let all the other dogs know I'm HERE.
