Arrival Story:
Ginger's arrival story is the result of a 2 year search for the perfect pet partner: A few years ago I was inspired by a therapy dog team who paid a visit to my workplace (a child advocacy center); I consulted with my colleagues and we agreed that having an on-site dog would be a wonderful asset to our work. I searched for just the right dog (online, shelters, rescue organizations) finally after 2 years of looking, I found Ginger at a local humane society. Ginger has a sweet nature and loves her role of greeter and nurturer at the center (just look into those eyes). Ginger was 9 years old at adoption, she is a golden retriever mix.

Bio:
Her history: she was raised by a family with children; it is clear she was loved; it must have been a very difficult decision for her first family to release her for adoption, but I am so grateful to have her in my life. I signed up for a K-9 Obedience class right away - a refresher for Ginger who graduated with honors; training for me; teambuilding for both of us. She goes to work with me every day. She spends time with the children and their families at my workplace; she is adored by colleagues on site and in the community. Ginger's Favorite places are: Work, The Park, and The Vet. Ginger is a friendly dog; she greets everyone affectionately; she is particularly enthusiastic when encountering fellow canines. Ginger's Motto: When someone is facing a difficult situation; sit close by and nuzzle them.

Ginger passed away on March 3rd, 2011.
Although she never lost her sweet gentle nature, she was losing her joy. In addition to arthritis, she had been declining swiftly as a result of Canine Cognitive Dysfunction (dementia).
Ginger joined the ABC House team in the summer of 2004 and quickly became a favorite of the children and their families as well as staff and community partners. Ginger provided the nurturing presence of a therapy dog at ABC House for 6 ½ years. She was 15 years old and will be fondly remembered for her gentle nature and friendly welcome.
I am blessed to have had her in my life.

Ginger’s year in review, 2007:

This has been an exciting year: In June I celebrated 3 years at my job and with my new mom; in October I celebrated my 12th birthday. During the beginning of this year, I enjoyed so many lovely walks in the park and I got to play with my good doggy friends; then I started limping and mom and I slowed down a bit; we checked in with the doctor and it turns out I had injured my knee and needed surgery (TPLO); in August I remember going to one of my favorite places and seeing my favorite people – I went to sleep and when I woke up, my leg felt different – it was very scary; I got to go home that night but mom kept me home from work for a couple of weeks. And she gave me massages every day; I got to go back to my friends at The Vet for Hydrotherapy for a few months (gosh that was fun – it’s an underwater treadmill – see photo – WHAH technicians are Wonderful), this strengthened my legs and now (at the end of 2007) I am doing very well. I’m up to 30 minute walks in the neighborhood, I can climb stairs again; and I’m feeling great – ready for the adventure of 2008!
