Arrival Story:
My heart got the better half of me yesterday... Here's the story of how lucky Lucy came to our family: Black Friday, my hubby had to go to work and I was to spend the day in Fort Worth with my mom. Well, I did go to Fort Worth and spend time with my mom (as well as my sister and her boyfriend). As we were running errands and were on our last stop and on our way home. We saw a woman on the side of the road at the corner of a walmart parking lot holding something black and white with bows. My sister and I both told my mom to drive by to see what she was doing. As we drove, the woman was holding two black and white puppies with xmas bows tied to them. I was soo heart broken.. it was 40 degrees out, and these little guys weren't even in a blanket or warm shelter. So as we drove by, we had to loop around again because we missed our on ramp to the highway. We pulled into a parking spot where the lady was with the puppies, and as these young girls approached and gave her money, took a puppy and walked off.. we proceeded to ask what the puppies were. Cold and shivering the puppy was, the lady walked over to our car and told us they were Pit Bull and Jack Russell mix's. I asked her how old they were and she said they were 5 weeks and only $20 dollars. That just broke my heart.. I saw another man approaching (who didn't look like he'd be a suitable home for a puppy at all).. and I asked my mom to borrow $20 dollars. I couldn't leave this puppy out there in the freezing cold, at 5 weeks old.. and she was gunna be bought by someone.. so why not I take this little girl home and get her better. As we handed her the money and put the puppy in the car.. the woman tried to give us a back of 'ol roy dog food (soft and crunchy).. these puppies are wayyy to young for that crap. So we refused the food..and we started on our way (note: the woman had 3 other ones she was going to sell the next day :-( ). So I looked over the little puppy (girl), and she was COVERED in fleas from head to toe, and had already scratched open a wound behind her ear. It is sooo sad. I called Sam and told him what we did, and that she was coming home with me (of course my mom and my sister wanted to keep her), and so we went to petsmart and bought her a crate, blankets, and some puppy milk with a can of sensitive stomach puppy food (Sam even bought her a little jacket for her to wear). I took her home and bathed her in dawn to get the fleas off.. we had to repeat it twice just to get them all.. she had to have over 30 fleas on her if not more. I cleaned up her wound behind her ear and off the little fat thing went to discover the kitchen (the only tile we have in the house). She caught on to peeing on newspaper last night, so I hope potty training her wont be hard. We decided to call her Lucy (at first it was Lucky, because she's lucky we found her.. but Lucy seemed to fit). So I now introduce to you Lucy... You see why I couldn't just leave her there?

Lucy's First Vet Visit

-From events on Saturday, November 24th, 2007-

Well, we just got back from taking Lucy to the vet for a check-up. She weighs in at 3.10 pounds, and of course they noted her for the fleas.. everything checked out fine (heart, lungs, etc.) but her fecal test came back showing Ringworms (and lots of them). We took home a small does of Advantage for the fleas, and Pyrantel Pamoate Dewormer for the Round worms (which should pass in a 24 hr period). She also has an extra does of the dewormer that is to be given in 2 weeks. She'll go back to the vet in 2 weeks to get her first set of vaccines. This poor little girl.. how could you just give up a puppy without any form of vet care :-( especially giving them up this young. Hopefully everything passes fine, and she's on a healthy start to a good life. Here's a pic I snapped of her sleeping in her little jacket Sam got her.
