The sun came up on a beautiful winter morning. The sky was clear and the air was cold but the sun felt warm on the sleek black coat of the Duchess Gigi of Geniality as she strolled through the meadow. Gigi was in search of the dried fall flowers and beautiful grasses that sometimes stuck to their stems throughout the winter months. She wanted to make a dried arrangement for her Queen, Daisey Mae, who was not feeling well. Gigi thought flowers, even pretty dried ones, might help her queen recover quickly from her illness.

At that same time, the handsome Duke Jettson DuPaw was out with his bow, hunting for quail in the same meadow. He liked to come to this meadow because the grounds were filled with birds and rabbits and other small creatures. There was also a fair sized creek that ran through the meadow that he fished in the warm spring and summer days. Duke Jettson knew that King Spivey loved to eat roasted quail and Jett was determined to find a few for the king’s table. Jettson loved the king and queen very much and was a favorite in the Royal Court as was Duchess Gigi. This was a time of great pawties and plenty of everything. Delicacies abounded on the dining tables and Jett brought some of the best.

The duke spotted some movement in the tall grasses and thought it may be a covey of quail so he gently but quickly moved in the direction of the disturbance. As he came upon the sight a beautiful pug raised up from her stooped position where she had been cutting dried flowers. Jettson was surprised, to say the least, to find the pretty black pug, Gigi, out in his meadow and said loudly, “Woo-woo-woo”, in a startled voice.

Just as startled, Gigi barked back, “woo-woo-woo”, as she jumped away!

Jettson approached her cautiously as he didn’t know if she was angry at being disturbed, but Gigi laughed and laughed at the attractive black pug who stood before her. She had of course seen the duke in the royal court, but had never been introduced. He always seemed like such a nice pug-man and so she sniffed at him politely. Jett sniffed back and he was polite as well.

“What are you doing out here all alone”, Jett asked?

“Why, I am gathering dried flowers for Queen Daisey Mae”, said the pretty pug. “What are you doing”?

“Oh, the Royal Highness, King Spivey, loves roasted quail and I was trying to find a bird or two for his table”, said Jett, “but you have probably scared them all away by now”.

Gigi was very sorry but also quite proud and because her ego was hurt she snapped, “You would think this was your meadow. I see no signs printed ‘PRIVATE LAND’ so I am as entitled as you to be here”!

Both Gigi and Jett held their ground there in the meadow on that beautiful winter morning and looked into each other’s big brown eyes. All the anger and frustration then melted as if a warm summer breeze had come from the south and replaced the coolness with warm feelings of adoration as the two stood face to face.

Both pugs began laughing and giggling and sniffing and snorting and licking. They ran around in circles as if they were puppies, jumping on each other in play. Although, they had not previously been introduced, they knew in that moment that they were meant for each other just like King Spivey and Queen Daisy Mae!

From that chance meeting came a great love and friendship that transcended squabbles and hard work and different groups. They built a New Charm School so other pups could learn from them how to be good, solid, sophisticated citizens of the Kingdom of Spoiled Pugs.

The end.
