A Simple Message From Your Pet

by Ken D. Conover

To have loved and then said farewell is better than to have never loved at all.
For all of the times that you stooped and touched my head, fed me my favorite treat and
returned the love that I so unconditionally gave to you. For the care that you gave to me
so unselfishly. For all of these things I am grateful and thankful. I ask that you grieve
not for the loss but rejoice in the fact that we lived, loved and touched each other's lives.
My life was fuller because you were there, not as owner, but as my friend. Today, I am
as I was in my youth. The grass is always green, butterflies flit among fthe flowers and
the sun shines gently down upon all of God's creatures. I can run, jump and play
and do all of the things that I did in my youth. There is no sickness, no aching joints
and no regrets and no aging. We await the arrival of our lifelong companions and know
that togetherness is forever. You live in our hearts as we do in yours. Companions such
as you are very rare and unique. Don't hold the love that you have within yourself.
Give it to another like me and then I will live forever. For love never really dies,
and you are loved and missed as surely as we are.

Your pet in heaven.

Mrs. Waite

This is the story of why one of my nicknames is "Mrs. Waite".

One time Momma and Daddy took me, Rooty and Penny Ann to the park fur a walk on a beautiful, sunny Eugene afternoon.

Daddy parked the car on the side of the street that dead-ended at a grassy field. We all got out of the car and Mommy put our leashes on us pups so we would be safe while we took our walk.

We all walked down the dirt path, through the field, to where the paved bicycle path ran parallel, through the park, along the Willamette River. That was always one of our favorite pawlaces to go fur a walk. We could follow the bicycle path to a pawlace where we could cut through the woods to get to a pawsome, little clearing by the river.

The clearing was a sandy area that our furless brothers named "Flat Rock City". It was surrounded by trees and there were big, flat rocks that extended out through the shallow water to a little, sandy, gravel island. Out on the island us pups were allowed off of our leashes so we could wander around sniffing all the scents and wading into the shallow water. There was duck poop, and that was always a special treat, but Mom was pretty quick to chase us pups away and not let us enjoy more than a quick nibble here and there.

While my furblings and I were sniffing around, snatching quick nibbles of duck poo, and just basically enjoying the fresh air, the quiet peacefulness of the breeze and the sound of the river, Mom would look fur pretty rocks and just enjoy being there with Daddy and us, furgetting any and all worries of everyday life. Daddy would just wade in the water a li'l bit and relax while sitting on a big boulder. Sometimes he would bring his fishing pole and see if he could catch himself a fish, which he would release back into the river so it could go free again.

We all just really loved these special times we shared.

When the time came fur us to head back home, Mom put our leashes back on us and we all would walk back up the bike path to the little dirt that led across the field and back to the street where our car was parked.

Well, on one of these wunnerful outings, when we got back to the car, Daddy helped Mommy get our leashes off and load us puppers into the car fur the very short trip back to our home.

Later that evening, when it began to get dark, Mommy called us pups into the kitchen so we could have our dinner. Well, here came Penny Ann and Rooty. Mommy was very surprised because usually all three of us puppers would come running as fast as our short, li'l legs would carry us!

So, Momma looked around and called my name... "Daisy! Here Daisy! Time fur dinner, Pippy Poppy! Come get your dinner!" But I didn't come and Momma still didn't see me anywhere! Soooo, Momma went to Daddy and asked him "Is Daisy with you? Did you let her outside in the pen to go potty?" Daddy said "No." He didn't know where I was - he hadn't let me out.

So now Momma and Daddy were a li'l bit worried. They looked all over the house, upstairs in the bedrooms, in the closets, even under the beds, thinking maybe something scared me and I was hiding under there. But no!

Momma looked at Daddy. Daddy looked at Mommy. Mommy asked "Did you load Daisy into the car before we left the park to come home?" Daddy answered "No. You didn't?!"

That's when Momma and Daddy jumped into the car and raced back to the street where we they had parked the car when we went fur our walk in the park.

By now, it was pitch dark outside. As the car drove slowly up the road, Mommy and Daddy could see a tiny, little black shape, way ahead, on the side of the road under the bright street light, right where they had parked the car earlier that afternoon.

That little black shape turned out to be me, sitting there like a good, little grrl, waiting fur Mommy and Daddy to come back fur me!

I knew they'd come back fur me! I just knew it! And I would have waited right there fur a hundred years!

That is why one of my nicknames is "Mrs. Waite"!

The Broken Chain

Little did we know that day
God was going to call your name.
In life, we loved you dearly,
in death we do the same.

It broke our hearts to lose you.
You did not go alone.
For part of us went with you
the day God called you home.

You left us beautiful memories.
Your love is still our guide.
Although we cannot see you,
you are always at our side.

Our family chain is broken
and nothing seems the same.
But as God calls us, one by one,
the chain will link again.

If It Should Be that I Grow Weak

If it should be that I grow weak,

And pain should keep me from my sleep,

Then you must do what must be done,

For this last battle can't be won.

You will be sad I understand,

Don't let your grief control your hand,

For this day more than all the rest,

Your love for me must stand the test.

We've had so many happy years,

What is to come can hold no fears,

You'd not want me to suffer so,

The time has come, please let me go.

Take me where my needs they'll tend,

And please stay with me until the end,

Hold me firm & speak to me,

Until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time that you will see,

The kindness that you do for me,

Although my tail its last has waved,

From pain and suffering I've been saved.

Please do not grieve it must be you,

Who has this painful thing to do,

We've been so close for all these years,

Don't let your heart hold back your tears.
