-mutt-pound dog-dog rescue

Likes:
attacking me ;) chewing up my underwear (hey, your dog has done it too!), rolling on the floor in total abandon, jumping in her baby pool at Nana's house...

Pet-Peeves:
Strangers, whenever I turn the tv off or on (don't ask why), people who approach her with their hands out, bicycles, trash bags...

Favorite Toy:
Her ball

Favorite Food:
Pizza! (Horrible, I know...)

Favorite Walk:
The field!

Best Tricks:
Um...tricks? Well, she'll chew the arm off of an intruder, does that count for anything? She's also PERFECTED the "go limp" technique that you've seen in 60's war protestors...if I want to bring her inside, and she doesn't want to come...TOTAL DEADWEIGHT!

Arrival Story:
I went to the Houston S.P.C.A. in January of 2002 to look into adopting a dog. Since I live in an apartment I thought I should get a small dog, and I also wanted to get an older dog since I know they are less likely to be adopted. I walked into the "Small Dogs/Puppies" section and started walking up and down the aisles. I also knew that I had to get a female, because I wanted a dog that could play with my parent's dogs, and one of them (Jack) is an alpha male who attacks any male dog that he sees. I saw so many sweet dogs, and I knew that I could adopt any of them, but I just didn't see one that really clicked with me. Then I saw this puppy looking at me with big dark eyes. I walked over to her cage and she pressed her little body up against the mesh so that I could pet her. I looked at the tag on the front of the cage and read: Female, 4-6 months of age, not house-trained, rescued from highly abusive situation. Oh good grief, I could NOT take this dog. Not house-trained? Still a puppy? Come on! But she kept looking at me with those big black eyes....so I asked the volunteer if I could see the puppy out of the cage. We went into a little "getting-to-know-you" room and I was hooked. This little dog smelled awful, she was sick, she was miserable, and I was in love. I asked the volunteer how big she would get. The lady said "Oh, not more than...um...15 pounds?" I must have known in my subconscious that she was lying, but I really didn't care. Turns out I was right, my little bruiser now weighs in at 45 pounds...Emma (as she would now be named) was spayed and came home with me within the week. I had to nurse her through a horrible case of kennel cough, and then I found out that the SPCA had done a faulty spay job, but I've never regretted a day I've spent with Emma. She's the BEST!! And I am a sappy dork :)

Bio:
Ohhhh Miss Emma. What a brat. She's the princess, and BOY does she know it! Emma has an "older" brother, a Quaker parrot named Monty. She knows that he is "off-limits", and she actually a little scared of him since he bites her on the nose whenever she gets too close. When she barks he says "Emma! Be QUIET!" and she gives me a look that says "PLEASE let me eat him now". Whatever evil person mistreated Emma when she was a baby really did a number on her. She is terrified of strange men, brooms, vacuum cleaners, bicycles, etc...she has a hard time learning to trust people, but if you have a dog, you are a-ok. I guess if she sees a person with a happy dog she figures they must be trustworthy :) Emma is very territorial and can get jealous if I play with other dogs. She LOVES little dogs and seems to treat them like her own personal toys. She is very submissive at the vet but can be a bully with other large dogs. Her favorite dogs in the world are her cousins Jack and Lucy, and her neighborhood buddies Maggie, Bilbo, Sissy, Jock, and Midnight.
