Leave a bone for Penny

Nicknames: Penny Pup, Miss Penny, Little Missy, Miss Priss, Princess, Brat Dog

Quick Bio:
Likes: Standing between your legs so you can scratch her butt; being fussed over; sitting in your lap for hugs

Pet-Peeves: Penny hates getting bathed, but loves being groomed (which happens after the bath)... Go figure...

Favorite Toy: Anything soft and stuffed with a squeaker inside; baseballs; tennis balls; other dogs' toys...

Favorite Food: Peanut butter; any fruit you can think of; any vegetable except lettuce

Favorite Walk: Ft. Funston and Sunol, or failing that, just around the neighborhood to the park and the high school

Best Tricks: Chasing her tail; randomly diving into hedges face-first (you'd think she'd poke her eyes out!) and coming up with baseballs and tennis balls

Arrival Story: We decided we wanted to get a Golden Retriever, so we did some research (well, a lot actually) on how to buy a puppy (avoiding BYBs, etc.), and went to a dog show at the Cow Palace, where we met lots of breeders. We really liked Tamra Howard, of Tamerlan Goldens, and went up to see her place in the next few weeks. She had a litter in the works, and in April, Penny's litter of 2 males and 7 females arrived. We got to see the puppies when they were 4 days old, 3 and a half weeks, 4 and a half weeks, and then at 5 and a half weeks. It was really cool to see how much the puppies changed from visit to visit! Penny came home on June 3, 1999, and our lives haven't been the same since.

Bio: When we brought Penny home, she didn't yet have a name. So how did she get her name? Sometimes people assume it's because she's like a bright copper penny. But that's not it. The name theme of her litter was "musicals". During her first couple of days with us, she sang to us with great gusto whenever we put her in her crate. The first time one of our friends heard her singing her "song," she said, "With those lungs, she really needs an operatic name!" The Three Penny Opera immediately popped into my head, and so Tamerlan's Three Penny Opera, a.k.a. Penny, the Golden Retriever, was named!

Well, even though life has returned to normal, I had to share this photo of me wearing the "Torture Device". Yeah, yeah, I know it's clear (and not prison-gray), but I still hated the thing. I was always banging into walls or doors, or mean ol' mom's legs, which made neither of us very happy (not to mention what the stress of it all caused to my digestive system -- ewwwwwww). However, that is all in the past now, so Golden tail wags and butt wiggles to you all... :-)

Well, I haven't been so successful at hiding the torture device (I think it has something to do with the lack of an opposable thumb...) Today was the first day that I haven't had to wear my nasty e-collar. I really wanna bite that thing. I don't sleep so well with it on, but mean ol' mom and poppy have been making me wear it A LOT the last couple of days. Last night I got my revenge though. I jumped on the bed before they could put it on me, but they put it on me anyway even though I was on the bed. I didn't care though, I was so tired. Then around 3 am, I really had to pee, so I decided to pant until I shook the bed so much they woke up and had to take the nasty collar off while I went outside. Then when I came back inside I jumped back up on the bed and curled up in a ball right next to mean ol' mom so they couldn't put the nasty collar back on! And they didn't! I got to sleep the rest of the night without the nasty collar! But poor ol' mom and poppy didn't sleep so well after that cuz they were nervous I was gonna lick my hot spots. Snicker...
[Gee, thankfully dogs really aren't as vindictive as we give them credit for... ;-)]

My mommy is a mean ol' mom. I have a couple of really yucky hot spots and she made me wear this big ol' ugly collar that I really don't like. Even though it's see-thru (an improvement over the big gray thing that I wore when I got spayed), I still bang into the walls and the furniture, and the backs of Mom's and Poppy's legs (ha!). I didn't get ANY sleep last night what with having to spend all my time panting and whining... Hopefully, my hot spots will go away soon and I can hide that awful collar from my mom so she can't put it on me again!
