Pet-Peeves: having family members go off in different directions

Arrival Story: My then seven year old son was "on a mission" to get a dog. After months of constant discussion on the topic, I'd semi-jokingly told him that if God wanted us to have a dog, he'd put one on the doorstep.
Toward the end of Summer vacation, he and I left the house one afternoon to visit a neighbor. Lying on the lawn in our common area, was a black dog. Matthew immediately noticed that the dog wasn't wearing a collar and began to wonder aloud if maybe she needed a home. It was a very hot day and I cautioned him to leave the dog alone, that maybe she was just resting in the shade.
We walked around the corner and the dog got up and followed us, then sat outside the neighbors' house. All the while were visiting,my son and the neighbors' son were peeking out at the dog, then getting it water, then food. The next thing we knew, they'd gotten a leash from another neighbor and were walking the dog up and down the block.
Finally came the inevitable, "Can we keep the dog---please??"
I called my husband and said "I think we might have a dog..."
After the necessary cautions about needing to find out if she had an owner, making sure she was in good health and making sure Dad wasn't allergic to her, I agreed to have her stay the night. ...But I knew we had a dog!...
My neighbor has since said that my mistake was involving God by my comment - that God has a strange sense of humor.

Bio: Lassie adapted to our family beautifully .
The name was Matthew's idea,he was clearly laboring under a delusion. I'm glad that there were no abandoned mines in the neighborhood from which Matthew needed to be rescued!
She was a very sweet dog, but not a genius by any means. She was however, extremely empathetic.
Just prior to the Summer that Lassie came to live with us, I'd stopped working due to symptoms of MS which included difficulties with balance and walking among others.
When I was having problems with balance, Lassie would walk right next to me, just touching my leg. That seemed to give me enough of a cue that I walked straighter. That was not a trained behavior, it was completely spontaneous and self-generated.
It did get me to think about the possibility of training her to assist me further. However, life took other turns and I was unable to pursue that in any formal way but it was not actually necessary. Lassie was helpful enough in her "natural state". After her passing, though, that thought finally bore fruit in Meka.
Meka died in July of 2001.
