Arrival Story:
Molly and Willy are enjoying happy times and becoming settled with each other, when the email dings: ". . . any room for a lab/border collie (?) mix . . . days are numbered . . . " " URGENT NO TIME - Breed: Border Collie, Labrador Retriever [Mix] Sex: Female Sonya is a 9 yr old who is desperately looking for a new home. Her caregivers are moving and they can't take her with them. If Sonya doesn't find a home, . . . putting her down rather than take her to a shelter. This lovely lady has a lot of good years left in her. She LOVES to play fetch, gets along well with other dogs, cats and people of all ages . . . " Ms. Soft-Heart, a.k.a., Soft-in-the-Head, springs into action. "I'll take her!" --while not looking very carefully at the furnished photos. So, we're off driving to Red Bluff--on Labor Day--160 miles away in 100 degree temperatures. We meet in a McDonald's parking lot. Sonya has no collar or toys, but she's ready to go with us after a brief discussion. She settles into the car for the return trip. By now, reality is setting in, even to Ms. Softie. Sonya, whatever else she might be, is no "border collie" or "labrador"--she's at least partly a PIT BULL. Holy Smokes! But, as it turns out, her behavior and temperament are perfect, and soon she's settling in nicely with our two border collies. In fact, Molly and Willy have been shown up in the department of deportment. So far, Sonya is the angel dog.

Sonya does love to fetch; she will fetch until it's too dark to see the ball. She always brings the ball right back to you, freshly dewed with drool. Willy can easily out-dash her to the tossed ball, but then he wanders away distractedly, whereupon Sonya triumphantly retrieves and insistently returns the just-abandoned ball to the tosser, demanding yet another drooly flinging. This is quite entertaining: as she tears off after the bouncing tossed ball, her bowed legs and boxer-style gait can be best described as frenzied lumbering.
