Arrival Story:
Ichabod is evil. I could deny it, but the simple truth is he has succumbed to the dark side, turned away from the golden path. He fights on the side of Mum-rah and Skeletor now. Really, I should say, he is selectively evil. As a cuddler, he is the pinnacle of cute and sweet. This is a dog that will contort himself to find space in your lap, that crawls under the covers to ball up behind your knees, that gently licks your eyelids to wake you up in the morning and that always, always lets you sleep in. He is, however, a raging maniac when on leash around an unfamiliar dog. He's taken on a Great Dane and won (mostly because the Great Dane in question was NOT evil but unfailingly sweet). He has barked and lunged at anything on four legs that dared to be taller than him. He snarls, he growls, it's utterly embarassing. He was also at one point food-possessive enough to bite and bite hard if you tried to get too close while he was savoring a greenie or a pig's ear. How, do you ask, did I end up with such a beast? Like all evil masterminds, Ichabod kept his true intentions hidden until it was too late. When I first met him at the OSPCA, he was in the kennel cough ward, wearing a big white e-collar, suffering from kennel cough and recovering from a neutering that had to be done 'invasively' (that's the medical term) because one of his bits had never descended. He was tiny, his big brown eyes huge, his big bat ears flat against his head, shivering as he sat on the chilly concrete in his too-thin fur. I already had two dogs. I really didn't need a third, but deep down, I was aching for a small dog. A lap cuddler. I offered to foster him until his kennel cough was over, and when we went home the first thing he did was crawl under my shirt and fall asleep. What can I say, I was hooked. He got along with both my other dogs, even played with Wren (a thing that Aslan would eventually learn how to do, but hadn't yet). I would have my cuddler, Wren would get a playmate. It wasn't until I signed the official paperwork that his on-leash dog issues appeared, and I had never given him any high value treats before, so our 'you've been adopted' pig's-ear was how I found out about the possession.

Ichabod now has an excellent, if sometime reluctant 'leave it' and will allow me to open his mouth to remove objects he shouldn't have put between his jaws in the first place. The on-leash nastiness is improving slowly with positive-reinforcement training, although I don't know if I'll ever trust him to be decent with another dog on leash. Off leash, with no barriers between him, Ichabod can be quite civil. His evil manifests in other ways as well. His need to steal any toy Wren or Aslan shows interest in. His sudden fascination with eating their feet or face if one of the other dogs seeks attention while Ichabod is in a lap. Terrier + Dachshund= Little Stinker it seems but what can I do? He's so adorably pathetic, so sweet and cuddly, what can I do but love him, evilness and all?
