Arrival Story: Magoo was found by animal control, dumped in a grocery store parking lot. Because he was in such poor condition and the extent of his issues were not known he was not eligible to go up for adoption. I was working for a rescue group and saw Magoo while picking up two other dogs that were going to our sanctuary and agreed to take him too. The plan was for him to go to the sanctuary where he would live and receive medical attention until a foster home could be found, but after seeing him and realizing just how frail he was, I decided to bring him home so I could care for him myself. Magoo is almost completely blind from cataracts and has neurological issues from head/spine injuries likely caused from abuse. His age was estimated at 12-15 years. When he first arrived he had a severe case of worms and his nails were so long they'd almost completely curled into a circle. It was obvious he had not stood or walked on his own in quite some time. Blood tests showed Magoo was anemic and confirmed a suspected thyroid condition which caused him to have itchy, flaky skin and hair loss. Magoo got a bath and a nail trim, was started on high quality dog food and given thyroid medication as well as vitamin supplements. We started propping him up in a standing position and eventually he was able to take a few steps before falling over. We encouraged him to walk every day and soon he was standing up on his own and walking. Now, Magoo stands, walks and runs through our house. His favorite trick is to spin for a treat. He still gets a little off balance and cannot walk a straight line, but he rarely falls any more. Magoo has put on 2 lbs, grown a nice, thick coat of fur and after blood work showed his anemia was resolved, he received a long overdue dental cleaning and was neutered. Magoo spends a great deal of his day sleeping but is very active in the evening and on weekends when we are home with him. Whenever possible we take him with us when we have to run errands because he loves to just GO. Magoo is a perfect example of how a senior dog or cat may need a little more care than a young, healthy pet but can give back so much love.
