In the middle of October 2006, Dixie was found to have a birth defect. Her skull was flat instead of round around her cerebellum, which caused her to have equilibrium and balance problems. It came on suddenly and without warning. The neurologist says she probably lived in pain all her life, but had a high tolerance for it, which is why we had no idea. Her brain, we believe, herniated through her skull and at the end caused some seizures. She died on November 16, 2006 on the way to the UF vet school neurologist. She, unfortunately, suffered her last few weeks of life, even though she ate good. She had to be hand fed and was spoiled rotten, not that she wasn't before, she was especially then. Her body was given to the Univ of Florida vet school so it could be studied and used as a learning tool for the vet students in hopes of preventing this or developing other ways to deal with it. Dixie is sorely missed and loved.
