Nicknames:
Kita-boo

Expected Adult Size:
Large (51-100 lbs.)

Arrival Story:
I believe she is a pure bred Akita. Kita was found abandoned near the river in Richmond. It is my suspicion that whoever had her previous bred her, sold the puppies and dumped her. She was accepted into AARF www.aarf.org and I am her current Foster mama. If you want to email me for more information about Kita, you can do so via dogster or at Ashley_Nollen@yahoo.com I would encourage anyone who is considering adopting Kita to read the articles about Akitas found on the Mid-Alantic Akita Rescue Site http://akitarescue.rescuegroups.or g These wonderful people have been very helpful in giving advice and information about the Akita breed. Kita is a very submissive dog but still requires a responsible, well informed owner because she does not like other dogs. She is a wonderful dog and I hope you take the time to meet Kita-boo at the adoption stand (Petsmart, Libbie and Broad Street- Richmond VA, Every Saturday from 11am-3pm) and consider giving her a forever home.

Bio:
Kita is such a sweet dog. She is what I call a "Bouncy Dog". Any time she is excited to see you BOUNCE, BOUNCE, BOUNCE all around the house. It's wonderful because she is so large and awkward (weighs 85 pounds). She's not entirely use to her adult height so she does a lot of silly things like trying to get into spaces she's too big for. She is also rather clumsy, she has been known to trip on her own feet. I'm sure in a year or so she'll be less awkward but right now its so darn adorable. I am recommending she go to a home without small children. Her personality is great for kids, but she's just too clumsy. She loves all the people she meets. She even loved going to see the vet, and met him with a very happy wagging tail. She's housebroken and not really a chewer in the house. She's a pretty typical Akita- doesn't bark unless there is a good reason to. She mumbles and "talks" to you. She isn't good with other dogs as is typical for the breed. But she is good at sitting on laps- see the photo of her with her Foster Daddy, she's a total love bug! She walks really well on a gentle leader. I am hoping to find a true Akita Lover for her.

Cat Testing- PASSED

March 16th 2008 6:39 am   [link to this entry]

We always noticed that Kita's reactions to cats were different than her reaction to dogs. We finally decided to "Cat Test" Kita and I wish we had done so sooner. We used the greyhound method- http://www.tlcgreyhoundadoption.com/cattest.html

Kita passed her cat test! She likes to smell them, but mostly she ignores them and is waaaay more interested in dogy toys than the kitties. If the cats run she will chase them but doesn't do anything once they stop running. She also takes getting smacked in the face by them without getting upset. She's curious but overall not too interested in the cats. Tested her with 4 different cats in two different houses. She did excellent.

We will continue to work with her with cats so she has some "cat manners" (ie no chase kitty if kitty runs) but she is hereby deemed CAT FRIENDLY!

Richmond Parents Monthly

March 10th 2008 6:08 am   [link to this entry]

Kita and her foster dad are pictured in this month's Richmond Parents Monthly magazine! They are the table of contents picture- half a page in full color. Not bad, eh? Its a picture of Kita sitting in her foster daddy's lap at the dog stand. They do that every dog adoption stand and at home too. She's so easy to flip upside down. People with cell phone cameras often take pictures of Kita and her foster daddy... but what's so unusal about an 85 pound dog in a lap?!

Several people stopped to talk to her foster daddy about Kita last Saturday because they saw her picture in the magazine. :) The only bad thing about it was they accidently listed her with RAL instead of AARF, but RAL knows to redirect anyone interested in Kita to AARF.
