Arrival Story:
A female Labrador Retriever named Gypsy was abandoned as about a 10 month old and would have been put down. Hungry and abused, she ended up with a woman who did her best to give this dog a home and make her happy. A little over 2 years later, the woman had to have knee surgery and was not able to take care of Gypsy, as the dogs tail would hit her knee and cause unintended pain. Rather than send Gypsy to the shelter, she was brought to C.A.R.E.S., a no kill rescue grou to be placed. A short time after Gypsy arrived at the rescue group, I heard of Gypsy and decided that this Lab would make a great companion dog for my guide dog at that time, Heidi, and asked to adopt her. The two dogs hit it off and became great friends, but the story doesn't end there. Heidi began to have health problems that made it hard for her to remain as a guide dog. She suffered several seizures that could lead to complications in her line of work. Knowing this, her owner then placed Gypsy along side of her guide dog to learn the skills and "trade" of being a guide dog. After a short time of parallel and individual training, Gypsy became proficient enough to take over the job as the guide dog and became her helper. Here is a dog that was destined to have a short life, instead became a companion to not one, but two people and even another dog and then ended up being a valuable part of my life!
