Arrival Story:
I found Dyson quite by accident on the local shelter page. I was looking for a dog for someone else, and his eyes just stopped me cold. "That's my dog, holy cow, that's my dog." I felt nervous - like when you go on a first date. I didn't need another dog. I didn't want another dog. What was I going to do with a lab in a condo? I already had three dogs, and I couldn't get him out of my mind. I went to meet him when the shelter opened on Tuesday. He was huge!! 97 pounds, with a terrible rap sheet at the shelter. He'd been there six weeks, people were scared of him cause he pulled on leash, pee'd on everything, didn't make eye contact, and pretty much ignored everyone. I was told he wasn't safe around kids or small dogs or other animals. He mostly ignored me and everyone else, and completely ignored us while we tried to engage him in some sort of temperament test. I took him home anyway. Dyson melted into our home like he had always been there. Already housebroken, a dream on leash as soon as we got him out of the shelter, and lovely with everyone. He broke out of a few crates, so we stopped crating him and he lays quietly by the door if I ever need to leave him. After a long and complicated recuperation from a botched neuter, I learned that this enormous dog that I hadn't planned, and wasn't sure what to do with, was the most fabulous working dog I'd ever had. Dyson immediately tried dock diving (he sort of does a magnificent belly flop), and found his passion to be detection work. Dyson loves to track, and is in training for flyball (which he adores), and schutzhund. He tried agility and loves it, but he'll never compete because he takes down more equipment than he actually manages to jump over! Most importantly, Dyson my service dog and accompanies me almost everywhere. He helps by retrieving things I drop and helping me stay focused in stressful situations. Dyson is truly a gift in my life, an unexpected one - the best kind. So this big dog who was "so hard to place" has turned out to be more than wonderful. He is the best working dog and will try anything I ask of him, and he is my best friend. He watches out for me and takes care of me every day. Everyone who meets him loves him and wants to know where they can get a dog "just like him." Just goes to show that there are truly some hidden gems at your local shelter.
