Likes: He loves going on car rides, going to the river, walks, treats, new toys, cat toys, his pack, watching movies, table scraps, trips to the beach, camping, and especially hikes either in the foothills or in the middle of no where.
Pet-Peeves: Tomatoes, carrots, strangers, strange cats, being left alone, and having to take a bath.
Favorite Toy: All of his squeker toys, but especially his thousands of hedgehog toys he owns. He loves tennis balls and sticks, but he still is attracted to torn up playground balls and the slobbery squeaking mouse, that's actually a cat toy.
Favorite Food: Peanutbutter, green beans, peas, broccoli, anything meaty, milkbones, and usually any crumb on the ground.
Favorite Walk: Anywhere and anytime! He goes on so many walks its hard to choose which one is the best!
Best Tricks: Sit, down, shake, high five, wave, spin, dance, beg, "You're on Fire!" *stops drops and rolls*, speak, talk, crawl, roll over, heel and stay (30 min).
Arrival Story: Juneau was found at the local animal shelter. He had come in as a stray, and weighed 40 pounds. He didn't like the shelter at all, and after going on an hour long walk and a game of fetch or two, we decided that this was our dog. He had already seemed so loyal to us, and when we put him back in his kennel to call the rest of the family at home, he was sooo sad in his cage. He pushed his face against the bars and stared at us with big brown eyes as we left the kennels to call. It was very hard to bear and we adopted him. We saved him from being euthanized.
Bio: Juneau had come in as a stray at the pound, but he was very well-trained when we got him. Whoever had him first certainly put a lot of effort into this dog. But when we first got him he had been aggressive with other dogs. We went through training and he is over it now, and he is only sometimes 'reactive' with other dogs only on a leash. But dogs (besides big obnoxious puppies) he's met he decides that they're his best buddy, and he actually has a lot of doggy friends he is so attached to.
Juneau keeps getting into the trash and dragging all of the garbage everywhere. It's starting to drive me crazy so I need to find more things that he can do during the day.
Juneau got to go to the dog park 3/15. He had a great time and played with all of the other dogs. He followed a german shepherd around most of the time. He actually got nipped by a lab. Juneau doesn't have the best dog-greeting manners established yet, so he really got what he asked for. He's learning so that's good.
Juneau learned to "take-a-bow", and now I'm working on teaching him to grab certain objects on command. I'm starting with just different brightly colored tennis balls. I'm teaching him colors, so if I told him to grab the orange tennis ball, he'd grab the orange tennis ball. It's going to be hard, but I think it'll be cool once he does learn it.
He already knows a lot of tricks. Here are all the ones I can think of:
Sit, down, shake, and stay (up to 30 min.)
Roll over, army crawl, speak, talk (he grunts), high five, wave, beg, dance, and spin. Also...Play the piano, "You're on fire!!" (stops, drops, and rolls), Over (jumps over an object), Weave (weaves through my legs), and "Yuck!!" (will refuse a food handed to him with a nasty face when I tell him to).
Juneau also knows the meanings of several words. Here are the words and the definitions.
"Walk" - Means time to go outside and walk as a pack, and to sniff bushes and swim in the ponds.
"Outside" - Means time to go outside and go potty, run around, play with toys, or chase a tennis ball.
"Kitty" - Means tht a kitty is near and to look around with big ears to make sure that a kitty isn't eating out of the food dish or stealing his toys.
"Where's the kitty?" - Means to shove yourself underneath the couch to see if the kitty is under there.
"Squirrel" - Means that the furry little pest is in my tree again and I need to eat him.
"Where's the squirrel?" - Means to bark frantically and try to climb up the tree to eat the squirrel. Usually the squirrel isn't even up there.
I've been feeling much better after my little illness problem. There was a growth on my neck that was making me sick! But the vet gave me lots of medicine and now I'm all better, and the growth is gone. On Tuesday they have to make me fall asleep so they can fix up my teeth. They'll be all sparkly and shiny...Mom adopted me after being a stray and my teeth were horrible. Too bad daily brushing didn't help too much. But I'll be totally better by Wednesday.
Today my mommy is going to go look at some friend's puppies. Mom says they're westies. She says that she isn't happy with the whole BYB thing going on over there, but she wants to see them because she loves the daddy dog a lot. They may get rid of the daddy dog after they sell the puppies. They only got him because they wanted to breed their female dog. I don't like the sounds of it either, but Mommy hopes that maybe our home would be a good one for a little westie who's lived in a kennel outside most of his life.
The neighbor dog named Jewels, keeps charging me and mommy while we are on walks. Jewels is a big German Shepherd, and tries to attack mommy through the fence whenever she is out there. I don't know what's wrong with that dog, I mean, why would she still try to attack mommy when I'm there...isn't she afraid of that hunky muscly dog with a curly tail and cat feet? Well, I'll admit that most of that muscle is lard, but don't worry. I'm on a diet.
Mommy is totally against BSL, but this GSD scares her. Doesn't scare me though. Yep, that's why I like to bark my head off when she's near. Perhaps that's why things get all stirred up? (Most of the times Mom isn't with me though).
I have a bark collar, and I don't like it very much. I just barked at everything and mom said it was not necessary, but whatever. I don't bark at stupid things any more, and I actually feel better. I don't wear it all the time, only when Mom knows something is coming up that I'll bark at but don't need to.
So my life is great, and I hope yours is good too.
Juneau is really sick at the moment. We took him to the vet yesterday and we did some xrays. His tummy was totally full and he's overweight. He's on a diet now but he hasn't been going potty or anything.
We are also going in for a dental soon. He had a blood test and turns out that he has an unusual increase in white blood cells. We are going back in on Monday. But he is still extremely lethargic and doesn't want to anything that he normally does.
The vet had set us up with some antibitotics and other medicine to make him poop better since that might be whats causing him to be sick. So Juneau is on medication for awhile. He acts just like our cat did when she had a kidney infection and she later had to be put to sleep. We really hope that its not the same with Juneau.
So wish Juneau good luck, because he is one sick puppy dog!
