Arrival Story:
Gilbert is currently up for adoption with Chicagoland Dog Rescue. (www.chicagolanddogrescue.org). He was originally adopted as a young puppy by a young teacher in CA. When she adopted him she immediately crated him, with no training or socialization. His crate became his safety. After a few months, she decided that she no longer had time for a dog and flew him (unknown how but we believe just in an airline crate with the luggage) from CA back to Chicago to see if one of her friends would take him. When she couldn't find anyone to take him, she gave him to her parents as they had previously adopted a Pit from our rescue. Her parents, however, could not handle 2 dogs, so they brought him to us hoping we could either take him or they were going to have him put to sleep as they didn't want him in a kill shelter.
We have had Gilbert for some time now and have worked to build his confidence. Gilbert was having difficulty with being boarded at a vets office as he no longer liked being crated. We have had Gilbert work with a trainer who is helping to work thru his insecurities. Gilbert is doing much better and is desperately seeking his new forever home. He is housebroken, does well with most other dogs, is very eager to please and likes belly rubs. Although he is still a little slow to warm up to new people, once he knows he can trust you, he loves you.
Bio:
Gilbert is currently being fostered by an animal trainer but wants desperately to be in a home. He needs to work on his doggy manners as he likes to jump and use his mouth to play bite, but seems to be very good around other dogs. (he actually doesn't know what to do with other dogs as he was never brought up around them, but he has never shown aggression towards any of them.) He would be best in a home that has older kids (if kids are in the home) only due to his level of energy and strength when he plays. Also a fenced yard would suit him to burn his energy.
