Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus
By Francis P. Church, first published in The New York Sun in 1897. [See The People’s Almanac, pp. 1358–9.]
We take pleasure in answering thus prominently the communication below, expressing at the same time our great gratification that its faithful author is numbered among the friends of The Sun:

Dear Editor—

I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, “If you see it in The Sun, it’s so.” Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus?

Virginia O’Hanlon

Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The external light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies. You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if you did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived could tear apart. Only faith, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives and lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay 10 times 10,000 years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

Hi ..I was Thanksgiving tagged by the beautiful Bella...

-Here are the rules

Because it’s Thanksgiving time, there is a change to the rules. Each player needs to tell seven special things they are thankful for. Tagged dogs must post the rules in their diary and their 7 things. Then choose 7 pups to tag and list their names. Let them know by pawmail or rosette that they have been tagged and to read your diary for the instructions on how to play.

1. I am thankful that Mom brought me home with her when my first Mommie and Daddy moved to Wisconscin

2. I am thankful I had fourteen wonderful years with my Mom and Dad

3. I am thankful for living on a farm where I could run and play all day

4. I am thankful for all the varmints I got to chase and the few I got to squish and carry around and show off with...

5.. I am thankful for my Sisters Sadie and Peaches, even tho they were a pain when they were little

6. I am thankful for having such loving pals on Dogster

7. I am thankful for every morning and evening I had here on Earth and for all the great days here at the Bridge with all my Bridge friends..

Mom is going to add my tags tomorrow when she has more time...

How it came to be..

My first Mom and Dad had to move to Wisconsin because he got a new job...I was 7 months old..This was 1991

They couldn't take me with them..My first Dad was okay, but he didn't believe Dogs should be in the house, so I lived in a pen with a good dog house..

They wanted to make sure I got a good home and it was between my New Mommy and Daddy and another guy...

My new Daddy didn't want another doggie at first, because they already had another Labrador, Kelly..

My new Mom was over at my old house right before my old parents were leaving...She took one look in my eyes and said...I'll take him..

She told the new Dad, that if I didn't work out, the other guy could have me...He was a good guy, just not as good as my new Mom..

I spent my first two days in the new pen, and got used to the farm..Then Mom said..I could come in.. much many things to knock off tables with my pawesome tail..I ran around the house and sniffed and woofed at my new sister..we played a little too hard and knocked over a bunch of stuff..

Mom and Dad just laffed and picked up the stuff...Never spent another night alone in the pen...In fact, Mom turned the pen into a chicken coop!!!! It got lots more use after that...
