We Did a Good Thing

The other day while walking with daddy, Angel and I kinda thought something might be wrong. Daddy seemed sad, and just wasn't himself. We tried to play with daddy, and I jumped up at the side of his leg a couple of times, but he still looked sad.

Then we got about half way through our walk, when we saw a doggy kinda like me, only bigger and with shorter, blond hair. He was standing on the sidewalk looking a little confused. Daddy called to him, (I didn't know why at the time because as far as I know he is just OUR daddy,) but the other doggy kept his distance. Still he looked like he wanted daddy's attention. I noticed that he had no collar, and I think daddy did too because he said that he thought the doggy may be relatively close to his home, but without his collar he said he had no way to know for sure.

It struck me as odd how this doggy kept his distance from us, but at the same time seemed to want to keep daddy's attention. It probably also was strange for daddy that Angel and I, two of the worst behaved dogs on the block, didn’t want to give this guy any trouble. But we knew he was wanting some help, so we left him alone. We usually want to meet other dogs, and are pretty aggressive about it to the point of shear insolence if we are denied, but we just rooted around the plants in front of the house where we were standing. It was our way of letting daddy know he could help this doggy if he wanted, and we would be happy to wait while he did.

Daddy looked up at the house, which had steps leading to the front door, and saw that the screen door was ajar, but the front door was closed. He walked towards the other doggy, and the other doggy headed up the stairs. Daddy started back down the stairs, and I am pretty sure he was thinking of ways he could transport him to our house for safe keeping until he could find his owner. (Daddy's cool like that.) Then, as we walked back to the sidewalk, the other doggy followed us.

I guess daddy finally decided to go up and knock on the door of the house because that is what he did next. We all went back up the stairs, and the other doggy jetted up in front of us. Angel andI went up too, and then we sniffed and touched noses with the other doggy, but we were careful not to scare him.

Daddy knocked on the door, and a few moments later an older lady answered. Before she could finish saying hello to us, she looked down and said, “Ricky!” She said, “You’re not supposed to be out here, get back in the house” Before she could finish telling him, the other doggy took one last look at us, and darted back into his house. The lady looked back at daddy, smiled, and thanked us all. She told us to have a good rest of the afternoon, and thanked us again as we left.

That that seemed to cheer daddy up. He reached down and picked me up, and held me next to his face. “That is why daddy believes in God.” he said. “Whenever I feel bad, he gives me an opportunity to help some one else, and I feel good again.”

That's my daddy!
