Arrival Story: The building next door to ours has been undergoing renovation for the past six months. We knew the crew was keeping a dog on the premises, but never saw it, just heard barking.
One day we saw our neighbor Alison walking a big fat puppy instead of her dog, a huge black mastiff. She told us she'd found the construction watchdog running around the neighborhood and returned it. But she noticed it had recently given birth. Seeing the dangerous conditions in the building, she asked if she could have the puppies. When she went back, only one puppy remained and she took the mother as well.
We'd lost the last of a pair of wonderful Cocker Spaniels the previous year that we'd had for the last twelve years of their lives, and we were just starting to consider getting a puppy. Later, after we bought a house. But sometimes the universe gives you a gift, and you can't plan when it's going to happen. When Alison, who knew we were good 'dog people', asked if we were sincerely interested in adopting the puppy, we couldn't resist.

Bio: Jack's mom was quickly adopted by a family. We later saw photos of her - she's an odd mixed breed of chow and labrador, with other elements - like a black lab in front, but with reddish fur growing underneath, especially toward the tail. We'd heard the father is a boxer of some sort, but that info is unreliable. Since adopting Jack, the biggest game has been in guessing what breeds she is. She has spots on her tongue and the coloring of a chow chow, short fur and tail like a lab. As she's grown, dark markings like a shepherd have emerged, with a rifge of wavy fur along her back, and her tail tuned black. Her pointed ears are large, and one stands uprigt. She's growing very fast - at present, she's four months old and weighs 40 pounds - and we from her appearance we sometimes think the workman thought he saw a boxer as the father, but it was really a great dane. We're planning on doing DNA testing.
August update:
Five months old and around fifty pounds already, Jack is adjusting to having mommy home during the day and pop gone. Now enjoys napping on the Bed, but doesn't know she's big enough to get up by herself. Becoming better friends with our cat, Boris.
