Arrival Story:
Cubby was found wandering in the East Everglades near Miami, FL when he was about 2 months old. My friend and I almost hit him with our car as he ran into the street. We stopped and I got out of the car. He ran right up to me and started licking my face! He was so little and cute as a button. He had this huge worm belly that made him look even more comical. At the time I was a vet tech so I took him home, wormed and vaccinated him and the rest is history!

Cubby is a typical terrier, he's incredibly smart and full of energy. He rarely sits still and when you try to pet him he enjoys it for about 2 minutes before he gets so excited he has to get up and run around like a maniac to celebrate. Mostly he wants to lick you, preferably in the face. If you let him lick something, like your arm or other hand, he may hold still while you pet him for a few minutes. Cubby is now 14 years old and shows no sign of slowing down. On Sept 11, 2001 (hard to forget that date) I woke up to find him barely moving around the house. He had his head sort of sucked back into his shoulders and was periodically screaming in pain. I immediately took him to the vet. I had to drop him off because they were fully booked and had to work him into their schedule. On the way back from the vet I heard about the WTC on the radio. It turns out Cubby had blown out a disc in his neck. This is a fairly common injury in small active dogs with longer backs like Beagles, Dachsunds etc. He went to a neurologist and underwent spinal surgery to remove the gelatinous insides of all the discs in his cervical vertebrae. He had like 30+ stables all down his throat and we nicknamed him "Frankendog". The recovery only took about 10-12 days. We had to confine him to his crate to keep him quiet and he had to be walked briefly on his own just to go to the bathroom. I think the confinement and separation from Newbie were the hardest on him. He healed in record time and is as crazy and active as ever. It was worth every penny we spent on the surgery! Without Newbie and Cubby I would never have survived losing Player. They are very special and wonderful companions. Update: Cubby was diagnosed with cancer of the anal sac shortly before the birth of our first child in February. Seems like these cancer diagnoses come at the worst times (but cannot think of a good time for it)! He had a successful surgery to remove the tumor and the two lymph nodes it had spread to. He is now undergoing chemo with carboplatin and is tolerating it very well. For a 14 yo dog to go through so much with no loss of quality of life is a true blessing. He is such a tough guy and I have no doubts he will only leave us when he is ready. Love you so much Cubby!
