Arrival Story: I honestly have to say that Shimmer girl is my rescue miracle. I adopted her September 22 from the shelter at our Petco. Shimmer is a Labrador/pointer/hound mix or something in that area. One of the county shelters was planning on euthanizing her soon when thankfully Lisa came to the rescue and saved her. The shelter I got her from is a non kill shelter organization, and I must say that they are some of the greatest people I will ever meet. Shimmer was there for 7 months, and I cannot believe that no one wanted to pick her up. Thank God that gave me the chance to meet her. At first, I saw a little black puppy sitting in a cage. His name was Amos and when I held him he didn't let go. In the beginning, it was just a visit to say hi to Lisa and everyone else at the shelter because we heard from Bobbi, the dog trainer, that they were visiting. Then I saw her. Unlike the other dogs who were barking, she lay there in her cage content with soaking up the sun and dreaming. I was just curious to know her name so I asked Rebecca. One thing led to another and I asked to take her out and walk her around. My mom and I immediately fell in love with her, not only due to the resemblance of our previous dog who died 7 years before, but due to her gentle and calm nature and her effort to please us while hinting at that "take me home" gesture. We called my dad to come down and see her, but since he was busy he didn't want to. I cried and cried until I was exhausted because I did not want to put my baby girl back into her cage... As soon as we got home, mom and I filled out an application to adopt her, without telling my dad. The shelter e-mailed us sooner than we thought telling us they would call us in about a week.... Yet the next day we got a shelter call saying they were having her spayed the next morning and she was ready for pick up that weekend!!! I was so anxious to get out there and once we saw her my face was glowing. After 7 years of not having a dog, I finally got one. And this one wasn't my parent’s dog, but MINE and MINE alone. To train, feed, love, and care for. She met Angel the queen guinea pig. They became great friends and Shimmer was always nice to her, giving her kisses and letting Angel sit on the dog bed. When Angel passed Shimmer was most likely right by her side on May 1st, 2007. She still misses Angel as I do, and we will never forget what an unbelievable friendship they had. Shimmer is a stubborn sweetie, but has learned plenty. She can sit and lay down, shake, wave, resist cookies, weave through my legs, go through my legs, go around me, knows left and right, and give high five. Shimmer and I now do agility and visit the dog park all the time. She is currently registered with NADAC under the name My Time to Shine because she is finally getting her chance to fly. We are competing and love it. It's amazing just to go out there and have some fun.
