Lex, Lexy, Lexypoo, Lechter

Doggie Dynamics:
not playfulvery playful

Quick Bio:

August 2nd 2002

Attention... he loves being touched, he loves "puppy school" (what we call doing tricks for treats), going for walks and rides and he loves his doggie door and patrolling his back yard. He also is our sentry at the front window.

People or pets walking in front of his house--how dare they.. . we are working on that too.

Favorite Toy:
He has a bunch of stuffed , squeaky animals. He used to tear his toys up in seconds; but these are his 'babies'. He has to have one in his mouth when he gets excited. He has not torn any of these apart, and does not like to share them with his brothers

Favorite Food:
He has to be careful because he recently had a pancreatitis attack and we were very frightened. Emergency Pet Center & 2 days in hospital--was on Science Diet--now Innova...and fewer treats. Poor boy.

Favorite Walk:
Anywhere...he loves it; but sometimes, he gets too excited when he sees other dogs. Never having had a big dog before, I am still learning to deal with that and we are working on it. A trainer worked with us; but he still needs some work.

Best Tricks:
Oh, Lex loves to perform--high fives, roll overs, sit ups (those were hard for him to learn), shake, and he is learning to 'smile . He loves to hold a 'baby' between his paws and roll over on his back and hold it high in the is so cute.'

Arrival Story:
Lex was originally named Lexington. We got a call from a friend who is a trainer and knew we loved Standard poodles. She said he had been given up and rescued by a Rescue Group...then fostered for a while by some great people. They were looking for a foster or permanent home. Long story short--it's permanent. We love him... Funny story.....after we got him, I noticed he would start wanting attention at around 5:30 every day...I would give him some love and a treat; but every day it was the same. His last Foster Mom called to check on him and I mentioned it to her. She laughed out loud...she said she had an older dog and gave him meds everyday at 5:00; so she would give her other dogs a piece of bread at the same time!!!! She loved Lex and thought it was so sweet that he remembered that. I really don't think I have ever known a dog that relishes attention and love as much as Lex does. We heard that in his puppy home...he was left in the car alone for hours--his mom was travelling to and from another town to help care for family, and he could not go in the home...not a good puppyhood. I think he was cared for and loved; but then became a problem when he got bigger and had no way to relieve his energy. I am glad we have him; but I am sad that his Mom never knew the wonderful, emotional dog he became.

When we first got Lex, he was only six months older than our new puppy--they got along great. I was afraid at first that he would hurt Truman because of the size difference. And, while they would play hard, Lex seems to know he has to be careful. He loves his brother and bathes him daily. He is a little excitable and hyper at times. It is very hard to walk him because of this; but we have promised him a forever home. At first, it seemed he didn't like car rides--would start drooling and panting. We realized he had been driven places several times and left there. Once he realized, he was always coming home with us--all of that stopped. He is also the most emotionally attached dog we have. If you are sad, he is right there next to you. I don't know how he could have been given up. He is so beautiful and loving.

I'm beginning to learn about my new feet....when Dr. Roach removed my bandages, I was shocked to see I had one less toe on two different feet. What???? Mommy says it was for the best and that I am cancer-free now. It is different walking on them right now, especially since they are on the same side of my body. BUT...I will persevere and be romping around soon. Mommy won't let me off leash and I am really a little annoyed about that. I DO NOT like to poopoo with an audience. She knows that. GRR. And, I do not appreciate the baggies on my feet either; but she tells me she is the nurse and I am the patient and that patients must BE patient!!!! Okay Mommy, I will. I hope all of my doggie friends who find they have the C word find a doctor as great as mine and have a mommy who loves them enough to be a true Florence Nightingale Pest.

Scary Times......

I haven't been here in a while because Mommy seemed to get too sad when she came to Dogster for a while. This was after losing my bruvver, Truman. I can't type so there you go!!! We've been okay though and I have a new little sister too (well, she's 2) so we are a threesome again.

I lost three nails that broke off under the quick since last May. Then Mommy noticed a lump on one of those toes. I was trying to let her know something was wrong by licking it a lot. She just thought it was because of the nail they had to remove once it broke off. When the lump appeared, she rushed me to the Vet. I like going there....they love me! Well, Mommy was told that this could be signs of cancer in the toes which can happen to large black dogs like me. We did antibiotics for a week, then x-rays and my bones were degenerating at the end of my toes. I was in pain but you know we dogs don't like to show that.

We were sent to a specialist named Dr. Roach. They removed a toe on my front and back left feet. Also two lumps in other places. I've been dealing with having to go potty on a leash which I hate....c'mon, I like my privacy!!!! And, Mommy is hovering over me a little too much but that's okay too. We have to put bags on my feet everytime I got out and the worst part is I can't run or jump at all.

Yesterday, we got the news that the biopsies were squamous cell; but he said they got it all with good wide margins. We will have to watch for any signs of trouble in the future because it can sometimes occur elsewhere but we ae going to be happy and positive about this. It could have been so much worse and we have learned of a couple of other dogs who did get worse news, so we are so grateful. We also got so much help from a few other dog moms who went through the same thing and they got GREAT results so they became our touchstones. Braun Boy was our fellow soldier we took comfort from because he is so happy and healthy now.

Well, stitches out tomorrow, and pretty soon, I will be able to jump back on Mommy's bed to cuddle in my normal spot. I can't wait.

I'm still here...the last of the was Oliver, our leader, and me the rescue big guy, and the little dude named Truman. We were a team and it took me a while to readjust. Now, I am the leader..and I make sure Luca knows this. At first, I didn't like Willow because I was still waiting for my Truman to come home...but now I know what I am supposed to do...and I do it. I protect Willow...sometimes too much according to Mommy. Sometimes I don't like Luca to play with her. LOL Well, he's bigger. Okay, I'll loosen up a little on that; but I do have to remind Luca I am the King. He doesn't mind though...he just had to learn a lot of things because he came right from a cage at the Metro Shelter...poor guy...he still can't believe his luck and scarfs his food like crazy and digs holes and marks territory. That's the only one tht gets him in some trouble, but Mommy is working on it. She never makes him feel unwanted. He loves her too much...he is literally on her heels when she moves...geez...he needs to man up a little. LOL Well, I am 9 now and King of my House. I plan to be here a while and carry on for my brothers who are at the Bridge now. Truman, I sure looked for you for a long time before I figured it all happened so fast.
But, I'm carrying on for you and you would be proud of me. I love you Brothers....have fun together til I see you one day; but right now , I gotta keep things in line here! Oh, gotta go...I hear a noise that must be check out~~~~~~~~~
