Roux is a fetchin' fool! He also loves to swim & play with his foster dog siblings.
Planet Dog's natural rubber Orbee balls -- they're extra good for chompin'
Boiled chicken, Zuke's Mini Naturals (peanut-butter flavor, please!), Solid Gold Beef Jerky
Why walk when you can swim? Roux can't resist ponds, pools & even puddles!
Zooming through tunnels & flying over jumps in agility class!
** UPDATE 09/29/07: Roux was adopted today and now has a big doggie brother named Rusty and his own lake to swim in! ** Roux is in a foster home in a suburb of Chicago, IL. He was initially adopted from a rural shelter in southern Illinois in November 2006. Due to some personal problems, the adoptive family relinquished Roux to a CRI foster home in June 2007. Since then, he's been living the good life with four foster siblings, a fenced half-acre yard, and piles of Planet Dog balls to chase. In fact, Roux is an outright fetchin' fool! His foster parents say they have developed Popeye-like forearms from throwing balls all day long!
Roux is about two years old and weighs 80 lbs. He is up-to-date on vaccinations, neutered, heartworm negative, crate trained, clicker trained, great with people of all ages (though he'd probably knock down a toddler out of sheer exuberance), other dogs and even cats (as long as they don't mind a tongue bath!). He is a goofy puppy in an adult dog's body and he often has no idea that he's bumping into people or other dogs. (Just the other day he actually sat on one of our dogs!) His favorite pastimes are fetch and swimming. He is an excellent swimmer -- maybe it's those huge webbed flippers, I mean paws!
He completed a basic obedience class and was a star pupil. He loves to learn new things and aims to please. However, because his training came later in life, he sometimes gets overexcited and requires help with self-control, especially when meeting new people.(He tends to jump and we're working on teaching him that a nice quick sit earns him attention and treats.) He has so much energy that he needs to be told to take a break, otherwise he will just go-go-go 24/7. We keep a wading pool in the yard and he will happily rest in the water, usually with a ball or two in his mouth.
Soon he'll finish a beginner agility class where he has learned how to do obstacles like the tunnel, chute, Aframe, tire jump and bar jumps. He has been introduced to channel weaves and the teeter totter. His foster mom competes in agility and dock diving and thinks Roux shows tremendous potential in both sports. He is such a ball nut that he might take to flyball, too.
Because of his high energy, large size and persistent ways (he will bark at you for hours just to get your attention if you let him), we're looking for a home with dog experience and knowledge of positive training methods. He'd also be happiest with a large dog playmate like a Catahoula, Lab or Aussie. If you have any questions, please email Julia Lane at email@example.com.
