Likes:
Grilled chicken, grammie's bacon, cheese, cookies, treats, belly rubs, his kitty, trips in the car, and his mommie and fun guy.

Pet-Peeves:
Baths, getting his nails trimmed, going to see the doctor, and when the refridgerator opens and nothing is given to him (which is rare).

Favorite Toy:
His kitty (Ben) or anything with a wheel. He REALLY has a thing for wheels...they are fun to bite.

Favorite Food:
He's a food man, so really anything. He enjoys junk food treats, grapes, and his peanut butter Birthday cake from Three Dog Bakery.

Favorite Walk:
In the mountains (where there are more things to smell) or in a new park (where, as Steinbeck put it, he can "read the local newspaper" left from other dogs on the trees ).

Best Tricks:
Understanding almost every word from his Mommy (and I'm not kidding!). He also has a knack for singing with the oboe...

Arrival Story:
I was in college when another person and I decided to adopt a dog from the local humane shelter. After looking at a couple of other dogs, we took Otis (then Hank) into a small yard to get to know him better. Instead of sniffing everything (like previous dogs), he came over to me as I was kneeling, pushed me over, and sat on me. I fully believe that he chose me, not the other way around. After 11 and a half years, he is still the center of my world. He adores his little brother, Ben (#124162 on Catster), although he tries to hide it.

Bio:
After fighting cancer for a year, Otis left us at 6:30 pm, August 25th, 2005. He died peacefully in my arms. He was courageous and strong throughout all of our attempts to save him. However, after his second blood transfusion, his internal bleeding didn't stop. We knew it was time since his quality of life was deteriorating. I will always love him... he was the closest spirit to me for 12 years, and he will always be my beloved boy.

Spring is just around the corner...

Well, we've made it to March. Just 4 weeks after the last chemo treatment around the end of January, we had our first check-up with Otis' doctor here in town. Unfortunately, despite all our hopes of remission, a tumor was beginning to grow again. So, far-be-it to let snow and ice get in our way, we packed up the car and drove to CSU again for more advice from his oncology doctor up there.

Bad news, not only was a tumor growing again, but the cancer had now metastasized to a sub-lumbar lymph node. At this point, it could hang out there for quite some time, or it could be a quick path to bad things.

Their advice was interesting and in line with my heart, as I didn't want Otis to go through another drastic surgery. We are now giving him a low-dose chemo from home every other day in a pill form so that we can hopefully slow the cancer down. It's a cutting-edge treatment--one that my dad was doing last year and is now in remission.

Otis feels great and is back to himself, unlike the days following the radical chemo. He is back to sniffing EVERYTHING on our walks, and he still enjoys playing "get the mouse" (an invisible one that he humors me with) in the park. On certain days, we can almost forget about cancer and things are back to normal, except that I know to cherish every moment with him.

Thanks for all of the support and sweet messages that we've received from his Pup Pals!!!

Birthday month!

We're celebrating Otis' 12th birthday (we're just going to do it all month long), and we have SO much to celebrate!!! Otis is through all 5 rounds of chemo, so no more sick days! Sadly, he is now expecting chicken, beef, turkey, cottage cheese, or some other special thing with breakfast and dinner, but we don't mind at all. He's feeling great and getting that spring in his step back!

Five days 'til Christmas!

Well, it's been a long season...fighting cancer and all. We are almost finished with the five rounds of chemo (going in for the last treatment next Monday), and we're all crossing our fingers and toes that its working. The best oncology surgeon at CSU was able to remove 99.9 percent of the tumor in September, and to delay the regrowth (which, we are told, will happen at some point), chemo seemed to be the best shot at...dare we say it...remission.

After 11 years of teeth cleanings, annual shots, and every other health issue covered, cancer really came from out of the blue. We may, depending on some x-rays after the last chemo treatment, have to take another trip to CSU for an MRI to see what's happening inside his body.

Overall, Otis is feeling REALLY well -- people can't even tell he has cancer or is undergoing chemo treatments -- so we couldn't be more happy. We can't wait for Christmas so that he can open all of his presents! After a disgustingly extravegant trip to Three Dog Bakery, he has quite a bit wear/eat/play with. He will also get more presents in January when we celebrate his 12th birthday.

We wish everyone joyful holidays, and thanks to everyone who is thinking of us. Give your pooch (or pooches) a great big smooch.
