Arrival Story: I found Sami by asking around. A local obedience school referred me to a doggy daycare who referred me to a breeder. After a long wait and a lot of nerves, I became owner as of June 15th after she was officially retired and spayed. Sami's ring name is "Champion Waytogo's Forevr Shazam". With her looks out of the way, we are going to work on earning rank in the smarts category!
Bio: Sami has successfully completed Basic Obedience at the Academy for Dog Training and Obedience (but it was mostly for me). Sami was practicing for Rally Obedience but that's on hold for now. Sami is a Therapy Dog. We work as a team for Paws for People.
I've been seriously neglected! Each day that goes by I get more bored... no playing... no Mr. Squirrel... no affection. Mommy is buying a house with a bigger yard than the one I have now. I'm excited but I want it all to be over with. I want Mommy's full attention again.
So last night Sami and I were bored out of our minds. We had nothing to do and it was too cold outside to do anything out there. I decided to teach Sami a new trick. It's a dog favorite: roll over.
I would have Sami lie down. I would take a treat and circle it from her nose and over her shoulder. In order for her to follow it she would need to actually roll over. After about 10 minutes of trying to get her to do it (and without my aid), she finally caught on!!! She realized after I pushed her little body to roll over, she would get a treat. Suddenly she was on queue every time! Each time she did it on her own, I gave her 5-6 small treats and lavished her with praise.
Today I worked on her executing the trick as is and not having to say "DOWN" prior to its execution. She got it.... even rolling over a couple more times hoping to get lots more treats! Trick LEARNED!
Now I know this is probably going to come back and bite me BUT I taught Sami how to get on my desk. We play fetch quite often with Mr. Squirrel and unfortunately Mr. Squirrel often ends up on top of the desk. If his tail isn't near the edge Sami can't jump and get him. I have to get up and retrieve the Squirrel which can be annoying on days when my aim is particularly bad. Last night I showed Sami how to get up on the desk by using the chair. After showing her ONE time, she did it on her own without assistance or instruction. I was in hysterics when I saw that!!! My Sami has such a quick way of picking up on things! She's very intelligent and I suppose since we aren't involved in Rally currently... we will start working on tricks.
