We moved!

Well, it's been a long time since I wrote in my diary. But anyway, we moved!

We moved from our old house to our new one. It's got a great big fenced-in backyard. There are two dogs next door named Emma and Zander, and there's a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel down the street that I play with sometimes. We go on a long walk every day, so I'm pretty happy. Just wanted to let you know how I'm doing! Bye!

Hello everyone! Christmas was great. I got two new toys! YAY! And now it's the New Year of 2010. How was everybody's new year? I hope it was good. And Christmas? Things have been pretty quiet around here. Life is normal, and good. Mary is acting the role of "alpha" more often, for which I am grateful, since I do not make a good alpha.

Well, I hope everyone's enjoying the winter!

Hi everyone! How was your Christmas? Mine was great. I got a bone with meat on it-real meat! Ahh...anyway, today it was cold, and I mean really cold. Mary says she saw ice on the creek in our backyard, and she is hoping for snow. Paws crossed she gets her wish! I like to see her happy.

Santa Claus-I mean Claws-I mean Paws-is coming to town!

Hi ya'll! Guess what! There's only 10 days until the first day of Christmas, 13 until Christmas Eve, and 14 until Christmas Day! Great, huh?

It's really cold here, although we haven't seen any snow. (Yet!) Whenever I go out for walks, I always want to come right back inside ASAP.

Well, other than that, there's nothing more to tell, so Happy Holidays to everyone, and I hope you get some snow!

Bye bye, Angel.

Countdown, frost, Christmas presents, and cold.

Hi everyone! Here is more of the countdown (according to Mary, because I can't count): 21 days until Dec. 21st, 23 days until Dec. 24th, and 24 days until Dec. 25th. Whoohoo!

There was frost this morning! When we went outside, there were a bunch of piles of leaves, and Mary saw frost on some of them! She got very excited. She said it was the first frost she'd ever seen. I was in a hurry to get going, because it was so cold, however, so she didn't have much time to look at it.

Mary and her little brother, Natty, have been really busy making Christmas presents for their family. Every time Christmas comes around I get a nice, big, beef bone with some of the meat still on it. And I sit there and I chew, and chew, and chew...every year except last. Last I got a rawhide, which isn't as good, but is probably better for me. Oh well.

Like I said, it was cold this morning! While we were taking our walk, my paws started to freeze, it was that cold! When we got inside, Mary held each of them and then made me lie down. But it was still cold in there! Now I'm curled up in the back of my crate into a tiny little ball, trying to keep as warm as possible. That's all for now, Angel.

And so it begins...

Well, it's finally happened. The countdown to Christmas is starting! So far, 24 days until December the 21st, which is the first day of winter, 27 until Christmas Eve, and 28 until Christmas Day! Is anybody else excited?

I don't really understand what Christmas is all about. But it seems to get everybody really excited, as well as put them in a good mood. Some of the traditions are a little bit crazy, in my opinion-whose idea was bringing a tree inside and hanging shiny things all over it?-but some of them, like presents, are really great, and some, like fires in the fireplace, are scary at first, but wonderful once you get to know them.

I hope everyone had a very food-scrap-filled Thanksgiving. Wishing you all a very merry holiday season, Angel.

The copperheads

OK, so one day, I was running around in my pen, as usual, in the summer of 2006 (or maybe 2007, I forget), when all of a sudden I saw a snake. It was sitting right outside my pen. I started barking at it, but it didn't leave, so Mary came outside and told me to hush, and started looking around for what I was barking at. She didn't see it at first, but then she found it. She went and got her dad, and he came outside and they decided that it was a copperhead. Mary put the leash on me and brought me inside, and then they chased it off with a shovel. That was just the first time. It came back next year, and they chased it off again. Then, next year, it was INSIDE OF MY PEN. And I barked at it and barked at it, and finally Mary came and started looking around outside my pen for it, only she didn't realize that she was standing right in front of it. She stopped looking and started shaking her head and said, "Well, Angel, I don't-" and then she looked down and saw it. She started yelling for her mom and brought me inside, but by then the snake was gone. The next time it came back it was outside my pen and slithering around, but they killed it. They thought that was the end of it, that it was gone, but oh no. Next year, this year, they saw a new one, and this one was inside of my pen. I was bouncing around it and barking, and then it bit me on the nose. Mary brought me inside and she found out, because she called for her mom. They called the vet and she said that she would give us some medicine. It didn't really hurt that much; in fact I was itching to go out there and get that snake, but Mary wouldn't let me. That was a while ago, in May. A couple of months later, in August, Mary brought me outside and I went and sat down in the grass, and a snake bit me on the leg. I jumped up and started circling, and Mary came and got me and saw the snake, so she brought me inside. Then she saw the bite on my leg, but just to make sure, she told her mom and they had me come out of my crate to see, only it really hurt and I was limping. They gave me some medicine (they had some left over) and tried to make me as comfortable as possible. But it really hurt. That night, I couldn't even go to the bathroom properly. When I tried to balance on my leg, it hurt and I kind of slid. In the morning I was much better. But ever since then I haven't been allowed out into my pen. Instead I have to take a lot of walks, which isn't a bad thing, mind you. But I miss being able to run around.

That's all for now, Angel.

I know this sounds a little bit mean, but...

OK. No offense to my pup pals' owners who do, but I have to say that people who call themselves their dogs' "mommy" or "daddy"-um, that's just wrong. I mean, the dog isn't your child! I say to Angel all the time, "How's my little baby-girl, huh?" but I don't say, "Mommy loves you very much, baby." There is a fine line between the two, and we have to learn not to cross it. Perhaps, if we called ourselves, "adopted" mommies and daddies it wouldn't be so bad. And then again, what's wrong with using the pronoun, "I"?

Likewise, this new business of calling your other pets (or, good grief, your children) your dogs' "brothers" and "sisters." I can kinda get that with other dogs, provided you say "adopted" as well. Unless, of course, the dogs really are related, in which case, enjoy yourself! But, except in science fiction, cats are usually not related to dogs. Period. Now, I know your cat(s) and dog(s) may get along fine. And that's great. But please remember, they are simply friends, not brothers and sisters. Again, "adopted" works great for any species.

But since when can't we just call ourselves our dogs best friends? Yes, I know the dog is a member of the family, but saying, "I'm his mommy," is taking it too far.

Please, think over what I have said. I'm not out to change anyone's mind; I'm just saying what I think. Thank you for reading.

Please help 1054!

Please read this message, if you live in Ohio, maybe you can help...

How sad is this, a beautiful senior lab who is going to be put down without anyone even knowing her name? She was picked up as a stray and is only known as 1054.

I have no doubt she was a very loyal, loving companion and now she is nothing but a number. Her age is unknown, but she is obviously an old gal. Don’t let old age fool you, if you’ve never adopted an older dog before this girl can bring more joy than you can imagine.

She is located at Portage County Dog Warden Shelter in Ravenna, Ohio. You can reach them at 330-297-6924. There is no time to spare, I know there is a perfect family out there for this beautiful girl, is it you?

Please post and crosspost this message, before it’s too late!

This is a plea to anyone who reads this. If you can't take in the dogs than at least post this in your diaries and send it in messages!

I received a message from a good Samaritan who is trying to do the right thing, help three rescues who need rescue. Unfortunately everyone she has contacted has looked the other way.

I realize times are hard, but that’s when help is needed the most. I know there must be someone looking to adopt an adorable dog (look at those faces) or a rescue group that can step in and help this person.

Hello rescue friends-

This is a plea to help 3 stray dogs in my neighborhood in Decatur, GA. They need rescue or adoption. So far, Canela (left) is in a temporary foster home, but Ossa (middle) and Beethoven (bottom) are still in their respective yards.

The brief story is that these are dogs taken in off the street by one of my neighbors, who has a big heart but not the best situation to be taking in animals. Her husband is not an animal lover to say the least and would not allow her to keep them on their property. She has been keeping them in the back yards of 2 separate houses that have been vacant for some time. She feeds and visits with them daily, and they all at least have a rabies shot. Canela is spayed but due to my neighbor’s lack of transportation, the other 2 are still intact (they stay in separate yards).

My neighbor has limited resources to place the dogs – no car, no computer, limited command of English – and she also has a turbulent home life. I want to help place the dogs for their own sake, but also so that she can focus on her own problems. She was assaulted and ended up in jail about 2 weeks ago, which is when I was asked to feed the dogs. She was bailed out a few days later, but has a court date coming up and could be incarcerated again. Hopefully together we can find these dogs a better situation. I can help with vetting / transport for anyone who can take them.

Ossa (my neighbor says this means “little bird” in Spanish) is a fluffy black border collie mix (my best guess). She is about 2 years old and is playful and friendly. She is maybe 30 pounds.

Beethoven is a shepherd mix puppy who is just under a year old. I thought he would be bigger than he has turned out to be (a thick but compact 35 pounds or so), so maybe he is mixed with a smaller breed as well. He is extremely playful and enjoys belly rubs and lots of affection.

Canela (”cinnamon” in Spanish) is a beagle mix and her tail is cropped because something was wrong with it when she was found, like the others, tied to a tree or a building. She is learning manners in her foster home and is getting along with both dogs and cats. She is also about 30 pounds.

I would take these dogs myself but I already have 7 animals in my house. I appreciate your concern and thank you for your efforts. Any interested parties may contact me at this email address.

Please feel free to post and crosspost this message, time is of the essence
