Arrival Story:
A kind-hearted regular client at the clinic saw Bones abandoned at a park and brought him in to be humanely euthanized instead of dying a horrible death all alone. Me and my fellow vet tech asked the doctor if we could take him and try to save him instead and he said yes...so I have a new foster at my house! Daisy-Mae was just adopted by a great family and a couple of weeks later, a new soul in need of saving appears. With the amount of cruelty to animals in this world, I guess there will always be some poor creature that needs to be shown TLC rather than heartlessness and abuse. Bones is a greatful baby. All he wants is food and to be loved on by anyone and everyone. Amazing how a dog's good nature shines through despite the years of neglect by humans. My two Pit Bulls are about the same height as him and they weigh about 65 lbs...Bones weighs 20! The pictures do not do justice to the extremity of his condition. Imagine a dog's skeleton...then picture some skin over it...and that's it. But the poor guy "doesn't have a mean bone in his body"...and you can see them all. He's not much to look at now (literally), but we can see the potential in him. He will be absolutely gorgeous when he's fixed up! A real handsome boy. He has a long way to go... we have to get him healthy enough to undergo heartworm treatment and have him neutered. He is extremely anemic and my co-foster mom brought in her dog to donate blood for Bones. He had a blood transfusion today and between that and the vitamins we've been giving, his gums are starting to return to a normal pink color. He's got quite a journey ahead, but he's obviously a trooper to have survived what he has already. He'll end up with a great family who will love him and care for him like he deserves.

My Road to Recovery

Heartworm Treatment

Well, Bones had his Heartworm Treatment yesterday and today. He wasn't feeling too good yesterday and was sick to his stomach and didn't want to eat much... sometimes to be expected with Heartworm Treatment. He's feeling much better today and is ready to get out of the clinic again. He is being spoiled down there though...with his co-foster mom, myself and the other vet techs giving him special yummies of chicken and special lovings. I'm sure he misses my dogs who have become his closest friends and the cushiness of his spot on the couch, but he will soon go to his forever home. He met a nice lady today who liked him a lot and may be taking him soon for a trial period at her house. I've become quite attached to him in the past month and I didn't know how much until I saw him feeling sick at the clinic yesterday... I will miss him when he goes to his new home but I am glad I was able to be part of his recovery and transformation into a "fatty-cake". I'm sure he will do splendidly and win over his perspective new owner very quickly with his sweet pittie-bull kisses and big goofy eyes. Since he's been with us he hasn't met a stranger who wasn't immediately his bestest friend. I'll keep his page updated and hopefully soon his name on dogster will be "Bones-Adopted-Yeay!"

P.S.- A whopping 50 lbs today!!!! Yeay!

The next step is Heartworm Treatment

Bones is doing fabulously. He was neutered and has fully healed from the surgery. No more humping....yeay! He and the girls are getting along like old friends. He is fully house-trained now and comes and sits and stares at me when he needs to go outside and potty. He will start his heartworm treatment next week and then a week or two after that should be ready to find his forever home. He is such a lovely and deserving pup. I hope we can do right by him and find him the best possible home, where he will be spoiled rotten like he deserves.

Bones has been staying with his other foster mom while I've been out of town for the past two weeks. I got him back and he's doubled in size since we first got him, weighing in at about 42 lbs. now...yeay! He did fabulously with the dogs and cats at her house and is doing well with Starbuck, Georgia Girl and Bailey and our cat too. He's eating well and gaining weight steadily. One setback, he started losing his hair while I was gone and we're not sure if its the malnutrition catching up with his system or possibly a fungal infection, just in case, we are having him lyme dipped and the hair seems to be starting to grow back. He's such a sweet boy and loves to put his head in your lap and be loved on. I think we are going to have him neutered some time in the next few weeks and then work on his heartworm treatment. For those of us not used to having an unneutered dog in the house, those "boy behaviors" are a little annoying.
But all in all, Bonezy is making good progress and will make someone a wonderful companion some day in his forever home. I will be updating his diary again soon. Thanks all you supportive Dogsters out there for sending him healing thoughts. They sure are working!
