Arrival Story:
Wheeler is our 4th CCI pup. CCI is Canine Companions for Independence (www.cci.org). It's a nationwide organization that provides service dogs for people with handicaps other than blindness. We are volunteer puppy raisers for CCI, which means we get these pups when they're about 8 weeks old & we raise them until they're about 18 months old. Then they go back to CCI and are trained by professional staff to do the service work. The dogs are provided free of charge to the clients who receive them. So the organization relies heavily on volunteers and donations.

Bio:
UPDATE: FEB. 21, 2009. Wheeler graduated from advanced training at CCI NE in Medford, New York on Long Island. You can see pictures of this wonderful training facility at www.cci.org - just click on the NE Region then look for the pics of the Miller Family Campus. Graduation was the afternoon of Feb. 21. Wheeler looked great as we were re-introduced to him after his 6 month advanced training. The trainers beefed him up so he will be extra strong in order to assist Leslie, who has MS and frequently needs help in getting up after a fall. He has become very laid back in his maturity, although he still likes to frolick with his playmates when he's not working. He's now living with Leslie & her family near Boston. The fun thing for Wheeler is that Leslie introduced him to Gus when they got home. Gus is another Lab, about 8 years old. So they have become great friends already & Leslie reports they are now seen laying back to back as they sleep on the floor in the TV room. We look forward to having a long happy friendship with Wheeler's new family. They're great people. The newest photo shows Wheeler leading Leslie away from the graduation ceremony. They're a beautiful team! Congratulations Wheeler!
