Arrival Story:
As of July 22, 2006, I am no longer the caregiver for Hassie, as she has moved on to her forever-home with Barbara in Washington state. You see, Hassie is owned by Canine Companions for Independence (www.CCI.org). Although I had her with me from the time she was 8 weeks old until last November, after that, she went to "advanced training" (what we puppy raisers like to call "canine college") at the CCI Southwest Regional Center in Oceanside. We turned her in on November 12, and, after six months in AT in Oceanside, she was re-evaluated, and the trainers determined she was better suited to being a hearing dog, instead of a service dog. So....off she went to Santa Rosa to the national center for hearing dog training. She was there just over two months and as of July, she was a "graduate" dog, with a brand new mom and a brand new life. Hassie is the second puppy I raised for CCI. She was with me from June 2004 until November 2005. during that time, she learned house manners, socialization skills and about 25 different commands. She is a beautiful, wonderful, sweet, loving girl and we are so happy she found a great home with a loving family who will need her services and love her always.

Bio:
Hassie is the third born of a litter of nine (six girls, three boys). Her mom, Corey, is a purebred Golden Retriever, and her dad, Hanford, is a purebred black Labrador Retriever. Hassie was with me from the time she was eight weeks old until November 2005. During that time, proved to be fearless, fun-loving, happy and smart. I had the time of my life raising her and look forward to many more years of helping CCI.

I'm a Hearing Dog!

Well, sorry it's been so long since I wrote, but it finally did happen....I passed all of my classes, participated in my second team-training at CCI's Northwest Regional Center in Santa Rosa, California, and I met the love of my life and new forever-mom, Barbara. You see, Barbara needed a helper to be with her 24/7 and to alert her to sounds she can't hear, such as the doorbell, telephone and smoke alarm. The most important sound I will be alerting her to, though, is the sound of her husband of 49 years, Bob, calling her for help if he needs something in the middle of the night. Wow. It's going to be an awesome responsibility, but I know I'm up to the task due to the terrific training and support I received from the trainers and staff at CCI.

Although it was very, very hard for my first mom, Leslie, to give me up, from the smile on Barbara's face, you can just see how much she is going to love me for the rest of my life. We had the happiest day at graduation (even if it was 110 degrees outside!) Mom and Barbara met for the first time, and then there was a big ceremony where Mom officially "handed over" my leash to my new mom.

My story ends here as far as my puppy mom is concerned. If my new Mom wants to keep up my diary, she may write again more once we are settled in, but for now, if you read my diary, please wish me luck on my new journey, and think happy thoughts for my old mom, cuz I know she's going to miss me in the weeks ahead. Onward.

My First Advanced Training Report

Well, my Mom finally got my first AT report. I've been in AT since November 12th, so it's about darn time, too! First of all, they're still considering me as a breeder, so kudos to me and my genes. I think because I am a first generation cross between a purebred Labador Retriever and a Golden Retriever, I am particularly fetching, but who knows?! Second, although I didn't have the best report ever written, it is pretty solid, and my trainer likes me well enough, so I think they are going to keep me here a while longer. I really like my roomate, I love playtime and field trips, and I'm having a blast with all the daily attention and love, so I say BRING IT ON! I'm ready! Next month's report should have more juicy details than this one, but since CCI doesn't let Mom come and visit me while I'm in AT, she'll just have to wait for the next report. Gonna be another long month, Mom. XOXO Hassie

Well, my first month of advanced training is almost over. The good news is that I"M STILL HERE! I'm still learning my commands and having fun and looking forward to a time when I can be placed with my forever person to help and love him or her. Keep your paws crossed for me!
