Arrival Story:
Mercer was the first puppy we raised for Canine Companions for Independence. We got him in the spring of '02 and he was with us till August '03 when he went for advanced training at the CCI NE Region on Long Island. He graduated in May '04 and is now a CCI Skilled Companion, working with a young, bright girl in Virginia named Shea. He loves his work and he loves Shea. Shea has spinal muscular atrophy but she doesn't let it slow her down, she's very active and fun to be around. Shea is just nuts about Mercer! He is crazy about swinging with her in the backyard swing. See more at www.walkforshea.com

Bio:
Mercer was a delight to raise. Training was easy because he is so smart and eager to please. It's especially pleasing when we see the fantastic difference they can make in the life of a handicapped person like our new friend Shea. You can see Mercer & his half-sister, Heidi together April 24, 2005 at the annual www.walkforshea.com a benefit for Shea. They are a beautiful pair, aren't they? The newest picture of Heidi (left) & Mercer (right) was taken at a CCI puppy party in Maryland. We were dog sitting for Mercer while Shea & family went on a cruise ship. We had such a fun week with him & he really enjoyed romping with Heidi every day. Now Mercer is really a celebrity! USA Today ran an article on 8-15-05 about Mercer and Shea. It went nationwide and helped people understand what service dogs can do for people. You can see the article at: http://www.usatoday.com/news/healt h/2005-08-14-canine-companions_x.h tm

My Book is out!

Hi everyone,

Shea has written a series of six books about me. They are children's books about some of my friends and I who sneak out of the house in the middle of the night to do things Shea can't do because of her disability. Can you imagine the fun a bunch of dogs can have on the ice, or riding a toboggan?

The books are titled "MARVELOUS MERCER," of course!

Read more about the books at www.marvelousmercer.com and order your copies today.

Both volumes 1 and 2 are now in print. We've made several TV appearances promoting the books. Watch for more to come!

Thanks,

Mercer

On Monday, August 15, 2005 there was a story about Shea and me in the "Life" section of USA Today. We now have our "15 minutes of fame!"

Here's the link to the story on the USA Today web site (you may have to copy it and paste it into your browser to get it to work):

http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2005-08-14-can ine-companions_x.htm

It's a very well written story that has links to other pictures and more information about Canine Companions for Independence and the people who train these great dogs.

Enjoy the story and pictures!
