We got Jake from a breeder. He was 2 months old. Perfect disposition, perfect standard, everything about him was perfect. he was the kind you could let off leash and he wouldn't go anywhere outside. No training needed. The "I'll follow you everywhere" dog.
We were planning a trip to Virginia (mountains) and couldn't bring him because we'd have to keep him locked up. So we made arrangements with a friend to keep him until we got back. her neighbor had a dog so he wouldn't be bored.
So we went, and around Thursday i felt like something in me had wilted, died. I couldn't identify anything wrong and shrugged the nagging feeling off.
We get home, no messages on the machine. So we call to inquire what would be a good time to pick up Jake. They tell us he's dead. Precious, perfect Jake is dead. 3-4 months old. We had only had him about 1.5 months. And he was gone.
It turns out they'd put him on a chain in their backyard with the neighbors dog to play unsupervised. They had children, so their was a swingset. Jake was running and attempted to jump over the swing. Being little, he couldn't touch the bottom on the other side. He'd hung himself.
They had the body at the vets. It was frozen. We kept it closed and buried him with my previous love, our first dog. I didn't cry much. Just sort of sat on our swing set and swung. I didn't know much then except it hurt, I'd just lost Puttles, and now Jake.
That was about 2 years ago. We've never chained a dog since unsupervised. the only time they've been chained is when camping, and they've had someone watching them at all times.
Please, don't chain your dogs.
