Arrival Story: We first met Lacey, when the two ladies, Peg and Kay, who run Riverbend Kennels, and do Greyhound rescue, brought her over to the Island to be part of a booth that highlighted Greyhound rescue at the annual Agricultural Fair. We fell in love with her immediately, and spent almost two hours with her at the booth. By the end of that time, even though we had had no intention of taking on another dog at that particular moment in time, we told Peg and Kay, from whom we had gotten Cherry many years before, that we were very interested in adopting her. They said that there was someone ahead of us, so they had to wait to find out what they decided.
We were incredibly disappointed when they called a day later to say that Lacey had been adopted by the other family. We had so connected with her in that short time we had at the Fair, that it was a terrible disappointment. They said, initially the adoptions are on a trial basis, so perhaps she would be brought back. We said that there was no way that she would ever be returned, considering what an amazingly sweet dog she was.
Unbelievably, she was returned because she was too much for their household. We were stunned that we could now adopt her, but very happy. She came to live here in Sept 2005, at the age of 2 1/2.

Bio: We had been reluctant to take on a new dog, considering that we had been dealing with so much with Crow's bone cancer, and Cherry was over 13, but it turned out so well. She and Cherry became the best of friends after they had some time to get to know each other, and would often be found sleeping on the bed together, legs all wrapped around each other. I think Lacey became a great comfort to Cherry in the last part of her life.
Lacey has a wonderful joy about life, and a very keen intelligence. I always say I think she is one of the smartest dogs that has ever lived here. She is also a stickler for rules, making sure the other dogs follow the rules, and will step in, in a firm but good natured way, when they seem to be drifting into an area that she knows they are not supposed to be, or about to do something that she knows dogs aren't supposed to be doing. Of course, when Cherry was alive, who was the alpha female here, but one of the most benign rulers ever, she would always defer to Cherry. Lacey is one of those great dogs that you are so happy to share your life with, and so grateful that you got the chance.
