Just wanted to drop in and let you know I'm doing fine up here. I know you've been thinking about me a lot. It's been a little over 6 months since I left. Louie has joined me. Duke, Sassy, Tico, Louie and I are having a blast running through the fields. I'm swimming like crazy - as you know I can swim all day now. I know you're getting ready for the SPCA Doggy Dash this year and want you to have fun. This year will be different with Bullseye, but know that I'll be with you guys in spirit - dashing with the pack.

Love you - Betty Boo

Today as we spent time at the vet's office picking up Betty's fur brother Smoky - there was the opportunity to see the flower arrangement sent in memory of Betty. It was important to thank Dr. Brick for saving Betty on 9/6 and giving her mom 6 more years to enjoy her fur daughter. It was also the chance to thank her for all the loving care provided to the rest of Betty's fur-family. There will always be only one Betty in her mom's heart.

Love you always!!!

Betty Boo Received Her Angel Wings - 7/12/12

It is with a heavy heart that Betty's mom informs her doggy friends that she crossed over the Rainbow Bridge and earned her angel wings. Her health had been failing and she had been diagnosed with a brain tumor. Ever the fighter to the end - she tried hard to stay with mom but she got called to cross the bridge. It won't be the same playing in the pool without her or enjoying Christmas with her in her costumes.

I am happy knowing that she is now playing again with Dukie and Tico and they can be family once again. I can stil see her prancing like a pony - she was so happy and proud. Nothing is the same without you. Run free Betty Boo . . . I will always love you.

We Have A Secret

We have a secret, you and I that no one else shall know,
for who but I can see you lie each night in fire glow?
And who but I can reach my hand before we go to bed and feel the living warmth of you and touch your silken head?
And only I walk woodland paths and see ahead of me,
your small form racing with the wind so young again, and free.
And only I can see you swim in every brook I pass and when I call, no one but I can see the bending grass.

Silly Betty

I am such a silly girl. For some reason today, mom was laughing at me when I looked at her before I started drinking my water today. I heard her telling someone later that since mom has been chasing Dukie away from the water because he can drink so long he throws up that I was looking at her before I started drinking to get permission. I am a pretty smart girl. I don't want mom yelling at me . . . . No Betty . . . stop!! So now I look before I drink. But then I do that when I go in the back yard to go potty because mom points to the wood chips instead of the grass. I go over to the wood chips and then mom says I'm a good girl. . . . She says I'm pretty smart too . . . .

I was born under a lucky star . . . I think - Life after surgery

Hello to all my Dogster friends! Here I sit with mom, burning up the keys. This is an update to how I've been for all my friends and others who might be following life for me after IMTP diagnosis. So - I've had 5 million blood tests since September. I am finally off of prednisone - at this moment in time and have been through the surgery I was supposed to have in September of last year. The surgery who's tests changed my life forever. So far my blood tests have turned out well - my platelet count continues to be up where it should be. My mom thought this would be a good time to have my surgery to remove the polyps from my gums. That was supposed to happen in September when I got sick . . . only problem was that between then and now . . . I've collected a few more skin tags (little extra spots of skin), one mammary cyst and a mast cell tumor. Needless to say - I was on the surgery table for a bit. The mammary cyst was benign and the mast cell was a stage one - which I guess is pretty good or so mom heard from my doctor. The worst parts for me are that I haven't been able to go swimming - too many owies, including one big one where my cyst was removed.

Mom got really scared the day after my surgery. I was doing really good because I made it through the surgery with no major bleeding. Except the next day mom noticed a big lump on my side - right over my ribs. It was on the side that I layed on when I had surgery. Mom got scared because it grew overnight and the next morning when she felt it - it was warm to the touch. She called my vet who wanted to see me right away. She checked it out and put me on prednisone again:(.

She said it would be for a short time. She thought the lump was an inner bruising caused by complications with my blood problem. It was from where I laid on my side during the surgery - kind of where the blood pooled while I slept. We got past that - and then I decided I couldn't wait any longer. . . . . that weekend I tricked my mom into playing throw the rope toy for me. I looked really sad . . . and she fell for it. She was swimming in the pool . . . I brought the toy to the edge of the pool and she threw it to the other end of the yard. . . .

Silly mom! The fastest way to my toy was to jump in the pool. All of sudden she was yelling at me. I'm not sure, but I think she was saying - "get out." She looked really upset and pulled me out of the pool. The next thing I knew I was covered in a towel and she was drying me off like crazy. I didn't even get to retrieve my toy. Sometimes she can be no fun. . .

So . . . life has been really boring. No swimming. I have this cone like thing around my neck again. I got my stitches out yesterday, but I still can't go swimming. My doctor said I had a reaction to the stitches and I have lots of owies on my tummy from where the stitches were taken out. But the best part of all is that mom is babying me like you wouldn't believe. So is my big human sister. She took a picture of me a couple days ago sleeping and sent it to my mom. Something about wanting my mom to feel okay and not get all worried about me. . . it's posted on my page . . .

I'm feeling pretty good again, but mom had a worried look yesterday at the doctor's. Even though I could tell she was happy she was sad. They were feeling me and said something about finding another cyst. Mom told the doctor that if it was okay - we'd watch it real close for a little bit. Something about me not wanting me to spend the summer in stitches and not being able to swim. She knows I love to swim. . . . I sure love my mom! And she loves me!! Betty Boo . . .

My first outing since I was really sick

I got to participate in the ALS walk with my mom. We walked a whole mile and then some. It was lots of fun. Evidently people heard about me being so sick and there were lots of people there hugging me. They even took pictures of me and gave me a T-shirt. I had lots of fun and hope my mom lets me do more walks again.

I've been really sick or what is Immune-Mediated- Thrombocytopenia?

It's been awhile since I checked in with the Dogster group. I've been missing my buddies and want to see how everyone is doing. I've been really sick and truth be told, almost died. My mom found out around the Labor Day holiday that I have a blood condition called - Immune-Mediated Thrombocytopenia. I spent 5 days in the doggy ICU, got poked lots of times with needles, had a blood transfusion, a nasty bone marrow test and lots of not so fun things done to me. It all started Labor Day weekend. There I was, enjoying the pool with my new found human friends. They were throwing my ball in the water and I was having fun playing. My mom noticed that I had bruises all over my tummy and the inside of my legs. She thought I had done lots of belly flops and put me on time-out. A day or so later, I was playing with my doggy friends and my gum started to bleed. Mom thought it was time for me to go back and see my vet because I get polyps on my gums. She took me in the next day and my vet ran tests after she saw my bruises. She didn't think it was from belly flops. She called my mom and said 'no surgery' - I was very sick. She sent me home with medicine after taking lots of blood from me. OUCH!!! The next thing I knew - that night the phone rang. My mom seemed really upset and it got worse when she held a flashlight up to my eye and saw blood pooling behind my eye. She started crying. Fortunately, I have a wonderful vet named Doctor Brick who calmed my mom and told her where I needed to go to get immediate treatment. My mom said later that if the doctor hadn't called that night, I would probably not be here.

Anyway, she took me to a big huge animal hospital. I spent 5 days in the doggy ICU with tubes hooked up to me and everyone taking my blood, giving me tests, and watching me really close. My mom got to visit me at night and the people there even made me a nice sign for my door that Mom took home. After x-rays, ultrasound and a bone marrow test, my doctor told my mom that I have immune mediated thrombocytopenia or IMT. I got sent home with antibiotics and a lot of prednisone. She found lots of websites that have made her feel a little better about me. Here are some she found: http://www.itppeople.com/animals.htm http://www.cloudnet.com/~jdickson/imhaitphandout.htm

She learned that the biggest thing that we need to do for me is to have blood tests to monitor if the prednisone is working and my platelet count is where it needs to be. I look much better now since the bruises went away. I'm starting to feel like myself again and even want to play.

From Betty's mom - Please check out the websites and learn more about this
disease. I was lucky enough to have a vet that called me that night and recognized when she saw Betty that morning how sick she was. She acted entirely normal this entire time and I had no idea she was as ill as she was. By the time she made it to the doggy ICU that night, she had already started bleeding internally. I hope anyone that reads this will pass this information on.

Locked Outside . . .

We had a fun weekend. I went swimming all afternoon I'm learning how to dive in the pool on command.

We got locked out of the house today. Let me tell you - that was fun. My big sister said she was going out for awhile = that was about 6:00 p.m.ish She stepped outside the sliding glass door and then I think she locked it as she left. Mom thought she'd go in soon after . . . not. My big brother Tico thought he'd let mom know . . . this is not fun. He sat by the door panting. Everytime she left the yard to get help, he barked and barked and barked - like he thought that would help. When she got back home . . . from next door . . . she filled the water dish. He didn't want outside water - - he wanted inside water. It wasn't even hot . . . but he acted like it was. I just wanted mom to keep throwing the ball in the pool.

Mom went next door and made some phone calls. Pretty soon - - 2-1/2 hours later . . . my big sister came home. We all went inside and drank and drank and drank water. There's nothing like inside water. Mom was pretty relieved - she now knows there is no way anyone is getting inside the house, especially her.

Doggy Dash Day

My mom and I participated in the Doggy Dash to support the SPCA. It was an interesting day for me. I got to meet mom's friends from work and soooooo many other dogs . . . .I didn't know there were so many out there. It was a pretty warm day. We posed for pictures. We participated in the walk to raise money for my buddies. Mom took me around to a ton of booths. I got to do a Pawcasso. It was a lot of fun. That's when you dip your paw in paint (non-toxic) and your mom helps you paint your thoughts.

The best part of the day was when my mom took me to a dog whisperer. Since I was a rescue, mom wanted to know about my background. It was pretty cool. The lady that worked with me and my mom made me feel really special.

When the day was all done, on the way home . . . . I passed out on the back seat.

I slept really good that night. I had a biiiiggg day.
