I tried to add the update to the last entry, but I kept getting an error, so just decided to write a new one so ya'll would know what's what.
The vet just called and all of my blood work is "outstanding" to use her term. She said there were a few crystals in my urine, but unless I'm having other problems--frequent urination, urination in the house--there's nothing to worry about. Mom told her we slept in the lv rm last night and I just basically crashed. She did A LOT of manipulating to me and with the blood and urinalysis tests, I was wiped out. I'm still kind of sore today too. She told mom to keep me off the bed (the jumping to get in and out is bad all the way around), give me TLC, give the pain pills thru the weekend and we'll see how I do. The limping could all be from the cervical spine problems I have. She said the next thing would be to refer me to a specialist to get a 2nd opinion and then on to a MRI. Mom read the booklet she got with that "Platinum CJ" and the reviews from customers was very encouraging. We're starting me and Austin on that tonight with our evening meal.
Once again I want to thank each and every one of you for your kind words and strong POTP. We'll be updating you as we go along.

Hope you're feeling much better Doo. Take lots of naps - that's what I do. Although I do that even if I don't feel bad, but plenty of rest and lots of fluids can't be bad. POTP

Doo's mom here...
Well its been almost two weeks since I took Doo in for her last visit with the vet. Unfortunately, she's still favoring the left leg. We finished the anti-inflammatories, I continue to give her muscle relaxers (per the vet), we're sleeping in the living room so she doesn't jump up and down from the bed, but unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any great improvement. (She's not limping, but walks very gingerly on that leg and will use her tip toes on that leg when she's sitting or standing.) I'm going to make an appointment with an orthopedist to see what he has to say. We don't even know where to give a steroid injection (aren't they given right at the site of pain/injury/lameness?) or if accupuncture will help (don't they need to know where to focus where the pins go rather than just "here, her leg hurts, fix it?") since we don't know what it is that is causing this lameness. Don't know if I want to go thru the MRI ($2000 min) or put her through surgery. She doesn't appear to be in major pain (or any that I know of, since she doesn't cry or yelp in pain, just the favoring of that leg) and will turn around and run on it if someone walks by her yard and she needs to bark at them. The "Platinum CJ" supplement I'm giving her can take up to 2 months before there's any indication that its working on her bones and joints. Should I wait til then to take her to the ortho doctor? Or are we causing more "damage" if we wait rather than act now? I'm at a loss as to what to do anymore. :(
I dont know that this is a help.... but I can only tell from my experience....
When Flicka was around 8 mths old we had an ice storm. Ice so slick you move on it even when standing still. We still had to walk... so we did.. carefully!!! He .. being a pup wanted SO to run and play !! On the 2nd day he scampered off.. seemed harmless... then.. in mid skid /scamper(at a surprising speed!!!) he tripped (I think... never could say exactly what happened) and tumbled over.... Nothing seemed amiss at the time.. but by nighttime he was limping heavily. I thought he had just bruised his shoulder area.... they go to great lengths to be stoic... I gave it a couple of days.. just massaged and didnt let him do anything.
It became clear he had a deeper injury.... we went to the vets. My vet is wonderful... he was of the opinion Flicka had injured deep in the shoulder... no specifics and gave anti inflamatories and Rimadyl and we did that for a week and an X-Ray that wasnt greatly enlightening ... . Went back after a week... vet was sure we would probably needed an op to mend this situ .. but tween us we decided to continue the anti inflamatories and Rimadyl (Do NOT be put off by the horror stories of Rimadyl.. used properly.. and the kidneys and liver supported by something like Milk Thistle... it is your dogs FRIEND !)
I really did not want to start slashing Flicka open without real solid evidence.. and there was none. We decided that we needed to just try rest. .......Yeah........lets keep a 9mth bounding Heeler puppy quiet !!!!!! But we did.. all walks on lead... no zooming... no jumping..... we did this regime for nearly 5 mths... still continuing the anti inflammatories and Rimadyl... the Rimadyl, I slowly decreased... till I was doseing only 1/2 a tab daily after 3 mths.. and then only when needed the last 2 mths.. till we were off everything.
Magic... he healed ... the vet was surprised.. he truely believed I wouldnt be able to do it with Flicka.... but we DID. It was just time.. sensible use of drugs.. and a heavy dose of "alternative" things and daily massage and heat and cold packs.
The vet is still surprised the injury never came back. Flix is now 6 .. just very occasionally he will faintly limp... its rare.. it goes in a day... I am aware he will probably get re-occurance with age... we will deal with that when it happens. Both Boys get Cod Liver Oil and Milk Thistle daily.. and eat good food...
You have to decide with Doo the road you want to take... it may be you change paths later on... but make a decision. She seems to be in little pain you say. You have discounted your worse fear.. bone cancer... maybe this is a time thing.... . There is nothing wrong with time and patience approach at this point.. you can change your mind anytime...
Sorry this has been so long... but this was just my experience of a similar injury.
What would we do without Flicka?! I hope your experience will mirror his. I wish I had some experience of my own to share, but we are small doggies leading quiet lives! In the end, it's probably best to take things a day at a time and trust your mommy instincts. Like Flicka says, you can always change course! Know that Doo is in our pawrayers.
Thanks so much Pam and it wasn't too long of a response at all. After I wrote the entry above, and before I went to the vet, I decided that I wasn't going to go to the orthopedist for a 2nd opinion. (They were going to call to set up the appointment, so called them around 8:15 to make sure they didn't make the call before I got there.) This supplement they have her on has made a DRASTIC improvement in her coat (it is sooo soft) in only 2 weeks. I'm going to wait the 6-8 weeks to see how it does on her bones and joints. Like I said, she's not in any pain and she's quite most of the time, except when she goes out in the yard and someone passes by, which is rarely and since her bark is so big and loud, I won't let her stand there and bark til her heart's content. (Don't want to upset my neighbors.) :) They gave the vaccinations and watched her walk and moved neck/shoulders and leg/foot all around, and no reaction from her at all and no resistance either. So vet is o.k. with us waiting, but said to take her to ortho directly (rather than come see her) should things worsen.
I noticed a small lump on her right side last week and also a small dark growth on her left side(I thought it was originally a scratch that was healing) and both will be biopsied at a later date. (dark growth biopsied and lump aspirated to see if its fatty tissue.)
So, we're doing the wait and see route for now and taking one day at a time. Vet said she'd call me in 2 weeks and again in 4 weeks to check and see how things are going.
Thank you Pam and Hershey and Winkie for all your thoughts and prayers. I know from experience they definitely help. :)
