Likes: Mommy, going for a ride in the car, going for a walk (especially the park). He is a pillow KING - the more pillows the better.

Pet-Peeves: Men, thunder, nail trims

Favorite Toy: Any stuffed animal - but it is shredded in less than 5 minutes. And, the cats!

Favorite Food: Anything his human peeps are eating

Favorite Walk: Park

Best Tricks: Making the cutest pig sounds

Arrival Story: Jesse is my little savior. I found him at the shelter which is where I vow to always find my furry friends from. I will never forget when he first got out of his cage with me, he stuck his head on the ground and his butt in the air with pure happiness and excitement.
Previous to him I had a beautiful, sweet Dachshund by the name of Morsel who was tragically taken very young in her life. I still get very sad about her passing but Jesse has certainly made me one happy Mom again - he helped me heal among many other things.

Bio: Jesse was several years old when he came into my life in 1993. When he had 2 big dogs to play with, he quickly showed them who was boss. He had a terrible habit of chasing cats as if his life depended on it. He is much better now but still gives kitties dirty looks and the flippy lip if he doesn't like what they are doing. Amazingly, the kitties know and almost always look at him for approval and if they know he is not happy they stop. Jesse is a lumpy boy, he gets all kinds of non-cancerous lumps and I love him just the same. He has had to have 2 surgically removed (see picture on very bottom) because they were affecting his ability to walk and move. About 2 years ago he was disagnosed with Hypothyroidism. Before he was diagnosed he started becoming so lethargic that he didn't even want to go for a walk - obviously something was VERY wrong. Now that he is on medication twice a day he is back to himself and happy as a clam. He still behaves like a 4 year old dog - lots of energy and enthusiasm. He loves meeting new dogs provided they are not in his territory. He has some "plays well with others" issues at times! Every morning he has to have a 'scratchy' before his morning cup of coffee (I do not let him jump off the bed like the SuperWeenie he is). He loves his morning 'scratchy' before being taken out of bed. His favorite place to lay is on the arm of the couch and if you are sitting there he will 'ooocccchhh' in between you and the arm. He loves that Mommy visits him every day on her lunch....Mommy loves him so very much!

Jesse could no longer sustain his beautiful, vibrant and happy quality of life after an 11 month journey with lymphoma. Although 95% of this time was truly a gift in that he enjoyed life to the fullest with no pain or discomfort, in the beginning of April that started to change. On April 17, 2008 it became apparent his discomfort and inabilities outweighed his quality of life and I had to help him stop the progression. On April 18, 2008, I lost my rock, my love, and one of the most precious beings that has ever blessed me with sharing life.
Beautiful Boy - 1990 t0 2008. I miss you so, and forever would not have been enough ...

A few weeks ago Jesse really started to decline; his lymph nodes were huge, visible without even touching them. They were so large it was making it hard for him to breathe. We tried a shot of Elspar (10,000 units) and within 48 hours they were almost all GONE and only 2-3 were palpable - they were less than an 1/8th of what they were. (He only had 1 side effect from the Elspar and that was that he threw up once.) Since his Leukeran was no longer keeping the cancer at bay, I had a lot of research to do on Lomustine as it is not as mild of a drug as Leukeran. I decided to try it (30mg every 3 weeks protocol), but I am not sure it's working as his lymph nodes are getting larger again. Please keep little Jesse in your thoughts, he loves all of his fans!
(BTW, lymph node enlargement is the key way to tell the progression of lymphoma. Plus, his energy and alertness level is rather apparent too.)
UPDATE: His Lomustine seems to be working. His lymph nodes have held their size for a week now. On Monday his blood will be tested and if his WBC is high enough he will get another dosage of Lomustine - however - it will be a lower dosage as his first blood test revealed a slow recovery of WBC. So far, he has had no side effects from the Lomustine.
