Arrival Story: Sunny was found wandering a busy road in Placerville, starved and covered with fleas, his age was estimated to be 13 or 14 years old. He spent a couple of weeks in the shelter there but his people never came for him. He was called "Sugar" by the shelter workers there because he was so sweet. When his time was up and no one had claimed him or adopted him, luckily for him he was transfered to South Lake Tahoe Animal Shelter where he captured the heart of a shelter worker. She took him home, cleaned him up, and then contacted Kim at Nor Cal Aussie rescue. He was taken to their sanctuary in Grass Valley where he spent 2 months being loved and cared for while he was waiting for his forever home. I saw his picture on their website and just could not resist his adoreable face. I stopped and met him and knew he had to come home with me. Sunny has been with me for over two years now and he is just the sweetest boy. He is a true "velcro" Aussie. He may have a couple "of hitches in his get-a-long", but this boy has plenty of love to give. He is now on arthritiis medications and enjoys a walk at the beach every day. I must give kudos to his dog brother Wesley for being so accepting of him as Wesley has been an "only child" for 8 years. Thank you Nor Cal Aussie Rescue for making sure this precious boy was given the chance to find a forever home. If you are looking for an Aussie to adopt or would just like to financially help this great organization, please visit their website. (norcalaussierescue.com). Please tell them Sunny sent you!
Bio: Please consider adopting an older pet . . . . ."One by one, they pass my cage . . . too old, too worn, too broken, no way. Way past his time, he can't run and play. Then they shake their heads slowly and go on their way. A little old man, arthritic and sore. It seems I am not wanted anymore. I once had a home, I once had a bed, a place that was warm, and where I was fed. Now my muzzle is grey, and my eyes slowly fail. Who wants a dog so old and frail? My family decided I didn't belong, I got in their way, my attitude was wrong. Whatever excuse they made in their head, can't justify how they left me for dead. Now I sit in this cage, where day after day, the younger dogs get adopted away. When I had almost come to the end of my rope, you saw my face and I finally had hope. You saw thru the grey and the legs bent with age, and felt I still had life beyond this cage. You took me home, gave me food and a bed, and shared your own pillow with my poor tired head. We snuggle and play and you talk to me low, you talk to me dearly, you want me to know. I may have lived most of my life with another, but you outshine them with a love so much stronger. I may be with you for a week or for years, we will share many smiles, you will no doubt shed tears. And when the time comes that God deems I must leave, I know you will cry and your heart, it will grieve. And when I arrive at the Bridge, all brand new, my thoughts and my heart will still be with you. And I will brag to all who will hear, of the person who made my last days so dear." I sure scared Mom yesterday. For some crazy reason, I just could not drink enough water yesterday. By the time Mom realized what I was doing, my tummy looked like I was about to give birth!! I also became very confused and started running into walls. So off I went to see Dr. Bill. They took blood, urine, did xrays and made me throw up all of that water and my breakfast too. I spent the day with Dr. Bill, but Mom insisted I came home last night to be with her. I know she was very worried that my kidneys might be failing and she might have to let me go to the Bridge. When I got home, all I wanted to do was lay by my water bowl, waiting for Mom to give me the little bit of water I was allowed each hour. I didn't have any interest in eating or sleeping in my usual place next to Mom's bed. Finally Mom feel asleep about midnight. When she awoke early this morning, there I was with my kitties Smudge and Sissel, laying next to her bed, cleaning them like I often do. She put some water out for me, and much to her happiness, drank just enough to quench my natural thirst--and no more!! I ate breakfast and wasn't disoriented anymore. She did get a phone call from Dr. Bill and the labs did show that my kidneys were not working perfect, but not too bad for a dog my age. I feel much better and don't know why I did what I did yesterday, and Mom hopes I never do it again. I will be going on a "renal diet" to see if that will help my kidney labs improve. Mom knows everyday with a senior dog like me is a blessing.
We will be going to the cabin in a couple of weeks so we can watch the Winter Olympics in a real winter atmosphere. Wesley and I can hardly wait to play in that white stuff called snow!

Mom says we are "stuck in Christmas" until our new computer arrives---hopefully tomorrow!!! It has been almost 2 weeks now without a computer!!
Mom took me to see a veterinary opthomologist yesterday to see if anything could be done about me losing my sight. I do have cataracts in both eyes, but at my age she was not really too optomistic about surgery for me. She said that many dogs my age that go blind can become very depressed. But she also said what Mom has always known. She said I am about the happiest boy she has ever seen!! But Mom already knew that . . . She also saw that my dog brother Wesley acts as a seeing eye dog for me, as I have a tendency to follow closely behind him. She said that will help keep my attitude positive too. I always knew I had a special brother . . .
Hope to be back on line soon!
Sunny
PS. Wesley in entered in a photo contest at the local newspaper. You can vote for him by following the link on his page. That would be so much appreciated if you have time.
When Mom got home from work this morning, she was wondering why she had so many emails and pawmails. Then she saw the email from Dogster that said "Sunny Is Dog Of The Day"!!! WOW, I am so honored and excited that they would pick me!! Thank you Dogster HQ!! Thank so many of you too for all the pawmails, rosettes, and special gifts that you have sent me. I have also received many new friend invites. We will be answering all of those soon.
I know how lucky I was to find a forever home at my age. I hope that people who are reading my story for the first time will maybe consider adopting a senior dog like me. My mom is sure glad she found me, and I am glad she found me too!!!
On a sad note, the very first congratulations I received this morning came from my very special Dogster friend SADIE BOO. She was diagnoised with cancer a few weeks ago and her very loving family had to help her cross the Rainbow Bridge this afternoon. Her Mom wrote a beautiful diary entry celebrating her life. We know how much this special angel will be missed by many.
Love from Sunny
