Major Injury #6

So, last night my mommy opened the door for us pups to come in after going potty. Ellie and I got too close to each other, and being the scrappy dappy doo that I am, decided to fight her. She is about twice my size, so that was probably a bad decision in retrospect. Ellie bit my eye and the top of my head, but I sure got her leg real good! My mom and dad were so scared that she had injured my eyeball, but today it's almost as good as new. They put some yucky medicine on it and gave me a pill. Bleh! I hope I have learned a lesson.... It worries my parents to think we could get into some real big trouble... I have gone to the vet for fighting at least four times. No fun!

A Parting Prayer

Dear Lord, please open your gates
and call St. Francis
to come escort this beloved companion
across the Rainbow Bridge.

Assign her to a place of honor,
for she has been a faithful servant
and has always done her best to please me.

Bless the hands that send her to you,
for they are doing so in love and compassion,
freeing her from pain and suffering.

Grant me the strength not to dwell on my loss.
Help me remember the details of her life
with the love she has shown me.
And grant me the courage to honor her
by sharing those memories with others.

Let her remember me as well
and let her know that I will always love her.
And when it's my time to pass over into your paradise,
please allow her to accompany those
who will bring me home.

Thank you, Lord,
for the gift of her companionship
and for the time we've had together.

And thank you, Lord,
for granting me the strength
to give her to you now.

Amen.

My mommy told me about a dog that died two days ago. It's owner had tied it out in the sun with no water, no food, and no shelter. When someone went to rescue her, it was too late... The suffering has ended.

A DOG SITS WAITING
by Kathy Flood

A dog sits waiting in the cold autumn sun.
Too faithful to leave, too frightened to run.

He's been here for days now with nothing to do
But sit by the road, waiting for you.

He can't understand why you left him that day.
He thought you and he were stopping to play.

He's sure you'll come back, and that's why he stays.
How long will he suffer? How many more days?

His legs have grown weak, his throat's parched and dry.
He's sick now from hunger and falls, with a sigh.

He lays down his head and closes his eyes.
I wish you could see
how a waiting dog dies.
