Axel made me laugh. We shared a love for bunnies and we took care of them together in a group we were both in at one time. We shared a love of Mini Coopers and we drove them together through town. Axel gave the best hugs in the world and was always there when you needed one. I think of him running free up at the bridge and know I will see him again there one day and we can drive our minis again.
Run free my good friend and know I will miss you.

I thought I should tell everyone who will listen about my Dad.
He works for the local animal shelter as an Animal Control Officer. Don't let that title scare you. We control him and we know it!
He takes care of over 25 dogs at the shelter. When I say takes care of , I really mean it. He is a Dad to all of them. He has no favorites! They are all his favorites and get equal time with him. He goes to work an hour before anyone else because he is worried about the dogs having to wait to go outside! He went early this morning because it has been very hot here this weekend and he wanted to let them out to play in the big runs while it is still cool outside.
My Dad loves "his"dogs! He tries very hard to match the right family to the dogs. Sometimes he brings us home to his house! Sometimes he just takes us in the van for a ride!
Lucky for me I get to live with him!
I was brought home after I was returned to the shelter two times!
I love my Dad and I know that lots of other dogs do too. That's ok. I will share him.
I just wanted everyone to know about him. He rocks.

I am so happy that my little sister Tika is going to be ok. I really missed her yesterday when she was at the vet . She had a seed stuck in her eye and it had to be removed while under anesthetic!!! Poor little girl...she is pretty woozy and wobbly today but I was told that she will be back to her normal self in a few days. I gave her a big kiss when she came home and I will watch over her today. I love the little rascal and didn't realize how much until she wasn't here!

Oh Oh. I am in the dog house. I had to get my nails trimmed today and I kind of growled and wanted to stop it from happening. My Mom was so upset... What do I do now? I didn't mean it. It was a funny feeling on my feet and toes and I was just saying please stop it. I had to have a thing over my face!!!!! Mom had to leave the room because she was so upset.Well at least my nails look nice now. Mom took me to the park anyway.
Oh dear... I am really a nice boy and would never hurt anyone!!!! What now?

Boy it sure has been raining a lot lately and this has meant that I haven't been going outside as much. I love to go outside! I have come up with some ways to keep myself entertained when it is too wet to go outside:
1. Race up and down the stairs - making lots of noise
2. Chase Tika around the furniture and through the house
3. Follow my human everywhere - within inches of them
4. Watch my human have a shower- peek behind the curtain and scare them
5. Wait in the kitchen for FOOD- lying on the floor in the way
6. Look pleadingly at my human every minute or so until they give in and take me for a walk in the pouring rain
7. Chew up any stuffie I have left and de stuff it thoroughly leving a trail of stuffing behind me

A Tribute To A Wonderful SPCA Dog!
Morning Swim Picture coming soon!
Caleb, November 2007 Picture coming soon!
Charlie and Caleb
Hi! Remember me? I'm the quiet serious guy you rescued from a life of misery and then looked after for months and months until my forever mom adopted me last May.
I want to tell you how great my life is now. I am as bouncy as a lab puppy. I run to greet my mom and sometimes almost knock her over. I love to climb into her lap..…actually I climb into everybody's lap. My mom says I'm a 62 pound lap dog. I also like to climb into everybody's cars - if they leave a door open I just jump right in and make myself at home. I have a bashful, silly, toothy grin when I have done something I'm not supposed to which always makes people laugh. And I get to sleep on mom's bed, with my head on her shoulder. Sometimes I even drool in her ear! Heh heh!
I love living on the farm here and I go for a romp in the pasture everyday. We also have an alpaca and a bunch of potbellied pigs. The mama and papa pigs came from the SPCA also, and the mama delivered ten babes a few weeks later. They are fun to watch. And their food tastes good too!
My doggy sisters keep me company. Charley, the collie, has been here forever, but just recently my mom adopted Belle, a twelve year old sheltie. I am a real gentleman around her. And after six months I have finally learned to live in harmony with Allie the cat too.
I go to daycare once a week where we go on long hikes, and I have dog friends that I love to play with. And other dog friends come to my place to play or we all go for a run on the dikes. I sure live a good life.
But now I must tell you something very, very sad. The other day my mom discovered a lump in my neck when she was petting me. She took me to the vet, who found some more lumps. They did some tests and then phoned my mom to tell her I have lymphosarcoma - cancer in all my peripheral lymph nodes. Today I went to a big hospital in Vancouver for xrays and ultrasound where they found more lumps, this time in my abdomen and chest. I am in Stage 4 cancer.
My mom is heartbroken, I can tell. She will decide what treatment, if any, to use in the next few days. Without treatment it will only be a few weeks before I go to the Rainbow Bridge; with something called chemo I might last another year but I could be very sick for much of it. My mom says she would rather I have a good quality shorter life than a long, sick and painful one. She thinks she will probably use homeopathy and diet to keep me as strong and healthy as possible to the end. I like the diet cuz it includes lots of meats and cottage cheese and sardines and yummy stuff like that.
Anyway, in case I don't get another chance, I wanted to tell you how special you all are at the Cowichan Valley SPCA. You took very good care of me. My mom and my daycare person and even the people at the hospital say I am the bestest dog ever. And much of it is thanks to you. Rowowowowowow!!!
Love Caleb, formerly known as Toad.

Dear Santa,
I am a lucky dog who has a forever home. But there are lots who don't.
The only thing I "want" for Christmas and all year is for humans to be kind to us.
Life is so short and especially for "shelter and abandoned dogs".
Even if there are nice humans that could foster a dog it would be wonderful. Some of my friends have been at the shelter for so long they have given up hoping for a family to love them. Fostering means that the doggie gets to live with a family and sleep inside a house at night.
There are nice volunteers that walk the dogs every day and my Dad does his best to love them but there are so many!!! They have run out of room! But never do they run out of love...
Thank you for the SPCA and all the people who help them.
Please answer my letter Santa. My friends will be so grateful.
xxx

Well I just found out that my friend was returned to the shelter that I came from. He was in a "forever" home for two months and he thought it was really forever but he was returned because the people said their lifestyle changed....
What does that mean?
How can this have happened? He was a good boy and really wanted to have a home of his own.
I am really, really, sad for him.
My Mom says that maybe someone will come along that really wants him forever and that he will have a nice Christmas and everything after all.
At least he is warm and well fed at the shelter. it could have been worse. He could have been dumped somewhere!!!
I hope that someone will take him home with them forever.

I think that Tika is on the road to the doghouse if she keeps on eating stuff that she shouldn't. She hasn't told anyone but she also ate a twenty dollar bill of my dad's!!!!
Yes i did tear part of my dad's car seat when I was a pup. I was left alone in the car and I got bored. I picked at a piece of material that was sticking out and the next thing I knew the seat was unstuffed and all over the place. I was in trouble and he was pretty mad, but he was able to repalce the seat by getting one from a wrecker's. I don't know how Tika will pay dad back the 20$ she ate!
Yesterday she picked up a dead mouse!!! I will keep an eye on her for my mom and dad but I can only do so much!!!! She is such a little monkey.
She wears me out so I am at work with my Dad some mornings so I can rest up for the afternoon and evening with her. I love her though. She is a pretty good sister and she lets me have her chew sticks when she can't finish them.

I think I am ok now...the vet fixed me! Well and a lot of love from my family and friends too. I guess you never know how much you are loved until you really need it. I know there are doggies out there much sicker than I am and I truly say prayers for them to get well or at least have no pain anymore. I was really glad to get some really nice paw mails from my friends to get well soon and Tika posted to a Get Well Soon forum for me.
Now I can do all the things I used to do like; go to the park and swim, play with Tika, sleep unitl I am hungry and eat until I am tired!!!!
It feels so good to be able to breathe through my nose again!!!!!!
I hope everyone has a great day today!!!

Well I had a good night's sleep and this morning I wanted to go for a walk!
Mom and Dad took me and Tika at 6:00 am! Dad wanted me to take it easy so I just went for about 10 minutes while Mom continued on with Tika "to wear her out"!
My nose feels good and I could smell again! I smelled some good smells today! I even managed to get the squeaky out of the new monkey toy my Mom bought me in under five minutes! BOL!
I am going to have a nap on the couch now and get my beauty sleep!
My mom said that I got an pawmail from my friend and he said he loved me. I am so happy to have friends because i never thought life could be so good when I was waiting to be adopted.

Yesterday I was away from my family all day long. I had surgery at the vet. It was a rhinoscopy to see what if anything I may have gotten stuck in my nose. I had to have an anesthetic and everything. The vet was very nice to me, but I was missing my mom and dad a lot.
My mom and dad picked me up and took me home so I could rest and recover from my ordeal. Dad stayed with me in the bedroom and mom stayed on the couch with the puppy so I wouldn't be disturbed all night.
My nose is very sore and still bleeding today. I am feeling very groggy today.
Tika is being quiet for a change!
I hope to be back on my feet soon and go out for a gentle walk.

Why do I love my new sister so much? It is because she makes me laugh at all her goofy puppy antics. She plays with my toys and find new games for us to play all the time. I chase her and she is really fast and can zip around me before I can catch her. She chases the cat and I love that too! My sister is always there to give me a kiss and wants to jump on me. She makes my mom and dad happy too and I really am happy about that. We all go for long walks together and people always tell me that she is cute and she is. I don't mind at all because I know I am handsome because my mom always tells me that.
We are going to have lots of fun together my sister and I and I will always love her even if she steals my favorite bone.
She is growing and getting a bit bigger now so I don't worry that I am going to squish her anymore.
I am glad that she came into my life.

Well I am still pretty sick today..
what happened is last week i went for a nice walk with my Mom and Tika and I must have snorted up some grass into my nose. I sneezed a zillion times but 2 days later it feels like i have a bad cold. My nose is really stuffed up and is draining this gross green stuff. I can't breathe very well through my nose and I can't sleep without it getting all plugged up....
The vet gave my Mom some pills for me to take but today my Dad took mer again to the vet because I am not getting any better. Now I have to go again and be put to sleep to see what is up my nose!!!!!
I am scared about this....Has anyone had this happen to them?
I hope it is only some stupid grass seed and I will feel better soon.
Oh and Tika has kennel cough!!!!!
We are ususally so healthy!!!!
Bye for now
Snorty Sam
