Being with her "mom"

Arrival Story:
Dixie came to live with us as a pup; she was 8 weeks old when we saw a sign for Lab pups while visiting relatives on a trip to Virginia. We stopped, and it was love at first sight. She made the trip home to PA on my lap. On the ride home, we were trying to find a suitable name; while stopped at a traffic light, we saw a truck with the name Dixie Transport--the name seemed perfect for this southern belle who had already stolen our hearts.

Bio:
Dixie was one of the most intelligent dogs I have ever known. She pretty much housetrained herself in just a couple weeks. She learned commands quickly and easily, and also understood words like "walk", "bath", and "ride in the car".As an adult, she also learned to spell--if you spelled those words, she knew exactly what was being talked about. If told to "whisper", she actually lowered her bark to a very soft, low-pitched "woof". She was very much a mama's girl; she was never more than a few feet from me all her life. In later years, we got a second dog; from the start Dixie did most of the housebreaking and training; like a mother would teach a child. At the age of almost eleven years, Dixie suddenly became very ill one night while I was at work. Our vet discovered a large tumor of her spleen which ruptured and was causing severe internal bleeding; he said she probably would not survive surgery and chemotherapy would not prolong her life nor improve the quality of it. So we held her one last time and said our goodbyes as she crossed over the Rainbow Bridge; I will love and miss her always.
