 Quick Bio:
Likes: Dad!!! Of course, Mom, Homer, & Justy, too!

Pet-Peeves: She HATES nail clipping with a passion!

Favorite Toy: Compressed rawhide or Nylabones

Favorite Food: Dehydrated sweet potato "bones", YUM!!!

Favorite Walk: The beach! We used to live on the beach!

Best Tricks: She sits up spontaneously when she wants something. If that doesn't work by itself, she waves her front paws, if no one seems to notice, she add little woofs. That WORKS!

Arrival Story: ADOPTED 9/30/2000, age 11 months: Bobbi-Girl was the only dog sitting quietly in the kennel area of Gulf Coast Humane Society when we came in. She had an inquisitive, yet sweet, look on her face that made us notice her immediately. The shelter biography described her in one word, KIND. As soon as we entered the "meet n' greet courtyard", we knew we were a family, but we spent an hour with her there to be sure she felt the same way! The best word to describe her to this day is still KIND!

Bio: Bobbi looks a lot like a yellow lab (webbed toes & all), but obviously has other genes, too - she has GOLD eyes. She remained silent for 3 months after being adopted. (Maybe someone taught her not to make noise in a not-so-nice way???) The shelter said she was NOT housetrained per the previous owners, but she never had an accident!!!

Deliberate?

MOM'S HERO: Just once, Bobbi-Girl broke her self-imposed 3 months of silence during that time right after adoption.
We went outside one last time before bedtime one night. We lived on the beach back then. She went down several steps of our little cottage on stilts, heard something and blocked my path. She growled real low in her throat. I tried to get her to move, but she held her ground. There were 3 young men very near to the cottage next door which was empty. We didn't go any farther, Bobbi wouldn't allow it & it was obviously not safe for either one of us.
Next morning we heard they'd finally caught the 3 men that had been robbing all the empty beach rentals for several weeks!
SAVED A LIFE: Bobbi doesn't like to go near the bathtub - that's where she gets an official bath!
Normally, I don't let the dogs have chew bones unless I can supervise since they can be a choke hazard. We'd never had a problem, but I teach health & safety classes, so I fret about safety stuff. One evening, I had to get a shower & get going to teach a CPR class. The dogs were taking their sweet time enjoying the compressed rawhide bones that are an occasional treat. I decided they would be fine since there had never been a problem & I left the bathroom door open. They were only a few feet away in the living room.
All of a sudden, Bobbi-Girl stuck her head into the shower, YES, the dog who hates the bathtub, & did a bunch of urgent little woofs at me! I knew something was definitely amiss...
I hurried to the living room & there was Homer unable to breathe, eyes practically bugging out of his head. While Bobbi supervised, I did abdominal thrusts on Homer (aka Heimlich maneuvers). On the 3rd try, that bone flew out of his airway & hit the wall!
Yep, Bobbi-Girl saved Homer's life!
Have you taken a Pet First Aid class???
MOM'S SERVICE DOG: When we adopted Bobbi at age 11 months, we knew I was having serious ankle surgery 2 months later.
After learning the basics sooooo quickly, I realized that she was smart enough to be a BIG help to me later so we did some training just for that!
While I was recovering, Bobbi picked up things I dropped, fetched the remote, put trash in the wastebasket, & even opened interior doors for me (see photo)! She also learned how to flip the light switch, but then I realized we only had a switch in the kitchen - all the rest were ceiling fan light pulls ("Uh, duh").
Later, she helped with my rehabilitation - 1st strengthening & balance, then walking, & finally running using her 30' beach lead as an obstacle course for me to avoid, jump, or...!
However, now that she is the pack leader (behind us) & has 2 other dogs to look out for, she looks at us like we're crazy when we ask her to do stuff like this!
