Arrival Story:
Symba entered my life when he was 4 months old - he had originally been adopted by my parents at a shelter at 5 weeks, but when my parents had to go out of the country on a family emergency for an extended period of time, I volunteerred to look after him. During this time, I discovered that Symba had learned some pretty serious bad habits, such as growling all the time and being extremely possessive of everything (his food, toys, anywhere he was sleeping)....all this at the young old age of 4 months!! Even worse, he didn't like getting petted, and would leave the room if I was in it. I was at my wit's end. He also wasn't very good with meeting strangers or other dogs. Fortunately, when my parents returned from their trip, they agreed to my petition to keep him, and I've had him ever since.

Bio:
When I first got Symba at the age of 4 months, he was an extremely dominant and possesive puppy, and did not want to be near me - seriously, he would leave the room, hide under the bed, and would growl at me if I came near or tried to pet him. It was really upsetting, and I just couldn't understand it. I decided to do a lot of reading on positive training techniques, and after a long time (almost a year) Symba suddenly seemed to turn the corner - it's like he finally he accepted that I was the boss. He now follows me around everywhere, LOVES people, and will drop his toys for people on command. However, we are still working on curbing his initial overreaction (ie lunging) whenever he sees another large dog on leash...he's usually fine off-leash, and he seems to love playing with the big dogs (he seems to have a special affinity for Shepherds)....still, he's a great dog, and my husband and I just love him! As a result of all these ups and downs, I share a very strong bond with Symba, and cannot imagine my life without him. Sure, he tests the boundaries from time to time, but my husband and I are fully committed to keeping him on the right path! I share this story with others in the hopes that they don't give up on rescues or their own dogs - it's just so rewarding if you stick by them.
