Bio: Nico has a sad story with a tragic end, and it is with a heavy heart that I share the life of The Nik. He was born the "runt" of his litter, looking more like a sheepdog than a Malamute. His human parents were not interested in finding him a home, and were about to drown him, when their son convinced them to give him to a shelter. He was adopted out to a family who treated them well at first, but then they began adopting dog after dog until there were about 17 in the house. Niko was the first dog, and he was used to living inside with his family. As his human mother adopted more and more dogs, Niko got moved to an outside pen in the back. All the dogs would be thrown food at once, and they all had to fight eachother for dinner. Niko would keep trying to come back in the house, and his human mom would grab him by the back of the neck and throw him outside. Finally, Niko was tired of this treatment, and bit his mom. She demanded that he get put down, and he was nearly killed, but once again, his human mother's husband and son convinced her to give him to a shelter. This is where we come into this story. We took Niko home, and fell in love with him. For the next half a year, he never left out side. He slept in our bed, he came on our errands, we cooked his dinner every night. We loved Niko like he was our child, and we treated him as such. We were living in an apartment in New Hampshire, and were one day from moving to a farm in upstate NY with 18 acres when Niko was tragically hit by a car. Niko passed away in our arms in a hospital that afternoon. We cried for two days, and I still cry almost every morning. We are so sorry that his tragic life had to end so quickly, and we are so sorry that we could not fulfil our promise to give him a perfect life. We only hope that we were able to make him the happiest dog in the world before he died, and that whereever he is, he knows that we loved him, and still love him with all of our heart.
