We just love it!

Ode to the Schutzhunder
by Tracy Stowers

For many people we seem to be geeks
'Cause of the 300 we always seek.
Training on days, sunny or wet
And even in snow I'm willing to bet.
Running our dogs, two or three miles
When we'd really prefer to be flipping that dial.
Staying up late is a thing of the past.
Gotta be up early while the dew lasts!

Tracking in grass both high and low
Counting the days 'til the hayfield is mowed
Looking for articles-new lost, old found
Do you remember the corner? Before or after the mound?
The birds ate the food, can't find the mark.
Wouldn't it be easier to track in the dark?
Then on to obedience, the second of three
Hey, watch your dog, don't let him pee!
Heeling up and down, back and forth
Can't get a straight sit for all it is worth
The sit is slow, the stand a walk
And now at the high jump the dog starts to balk.
Go back to the play! Go back to the food!
Train every day, no matter your mood.

Your goal is a trial, one month away.
Then you sit down and think-it's ONLY thirty days!
We get to protection, the dogs' favorite part.
Helper and dog-it's really an art.
The intent of the stare, the desire to please,
Always alert, never at ease.
There is nothing more beautiful than a good courage test.
A way to weed out the chaff from the best.
Helper and dog together as one
No wonder the dogs have so much fun.

The day of the trial, one you'll never forget
No matter what happens, what score you will get
Perfection is rare on that never-ending track.
Most often you wish time would go back.
Obedience is another time you pray
Hoping not to repeat it some other day.
Protection, you hope, your dog shows its stuff
To prove that it's not another piece of fluff.

The next day you start all over again
Unless your old man is starting to wane.
Then there's the search for your dog of perfection
That will get perfect scores in tracking, obedience and protection.
Once you start, it gets under your skin
It doesn't matter what occupation you're in
The hardest thing you do, getting a Schutzhund title
Because while you try, you will never be idle!

Valentine's Day Present for a Lucky Pup

I posted this in Other Barks and Woofs but figured that I'd put the word out on here too.

Okay...here's the deal.
My furmily and I would like to give a special Valentine's present to one lucky pup. Problem is, I'm having a really tough time deciding who to give it to.
I am hoping that somepup can help me decide.
So, I am holding sort of a contest and the winner will get a one year subscription for Dogster Plus.

All you have to do is write a short Valentine's Day poem or essay to your pup telling them how much they mean to you and how loved they are. Pretty easy, huh?

The deadline for entry will be 5pm Dogster time Saturday, February 14th.
I will read all the entries and decide who the lucky pup will be and announce it by 9am on Sunday, February 15th.

Mom's can be soooo embarrassing....

Ya know...I can't understand why my mom always feels the need to embarrass me in front of my pals and even strangers.
She insists on calling me silly names such as "Goofus", "Baby", "Mr. Wigglebutt" in this cutesy voice...I mean, c'mon mom! I'm not a baby. I'm almost 3 years old.

I love my mom a whole bunch but she always hugs me and gives me kisses in public. I mean, that's okay when nobody else is around but I have an image to uphold. I really do love all the attention and the lovin' in private, though. bol

She has been like this since I came to live here. It was fine when I was a little tyke but for the past year or so but it's just not cool anymore.
My friends all giggle and snicker when I walk by them now. They whisper behind their paws to each other about me. And the ladies all call me a "Momma's Boy"!

Sigh...What can I do to make mom stop treating me like a baby in public? I don't want to upset her. Maybe my furless brother can give me some ideas. He finally got her to stop doing that to him about a year ago.
I just want everyone to stop calling me Fungi, Mr. Wigglebutt Momma's Boy.
Sigh...

I am supposed to name 5 things about me that are naughty..
BOL - that shouldn't be too hard..

Here goes...
1) When mom is on the computer, I stand right next to the laptop and slam my ball on the keyboard when I want attention.
2) I zoom like a mad man in a big circle around one of the bushes in our yard. There is a huge trench around the bush because of me.
3) I always have to irritate Romeo. I like to run past him, tap him and run away. It makes him yell at me but I love to have fun at his expense sometimes.
4) Sometimes when I'm laying in bed, I'll stretch out as much as I can and push mom's legs off the bed.
5) When it's time to get up in the morning (hey, I gotta pee and get some breakfast!), I yank the blankets off of mom and when she tries to pull them back up, I play a game of tug with her. It may not be fun for her but it sure amuses me. bol!

I made mommy sooo proud today!!!

Mommy took me to Woofstock today and I was such an incredibly good boy! I made her so proud. I have no problems around other dogs (unless there is a toy or food involved) but she wasn't sure how I would be around pups I don't see all the time. Or I like to play really rough which is fine with Baci but not so many others...

When we got there, she just let me sit and observe from a distance for a little bit and I looked at her like "can we go in now???". I was a real sweetheart. Everyone said I was so beautiful and they said I was a sweet "baby". And a couple of girls there with Pinups for Pitbulls let me give them big kisses and they gave me hugs.
The only problem we "almost" had was when a husky came up into my face and growled at me. Mommy asked them to please move away and kindly let them know that one of their dogs growled at me. The female owner just rolled her eyes and walked away. The male owner pulled both husky's away and followed her.

Then I saw a pup that looked like a "Mini me". We both looked at each other and tilted our heads. It was like looking at myself as a little puppy. bol Mommy said he was a Min Pin. He sure was a handsome little dude.

The best part of my day (besides getting treats, pets and scritches) was when I saw 2 other dobies (Apollo and Carmella) at the booth for the Doberman rescue in our state.
I haven't seen one since I left my little furbrother and furmom when I was 9 weeks old. Oh it was so pawsome. We all gave each other big dobie nose rubs and just kept trying to give each other kisses. Now daddy is saying maybe we should rescue a dobie for me to hang out with since I seemed to really love the ones I met today. Mommy says we can't because we have too many pups now.

It was such a grrrrreat day!!! I can't wait to go to something like that again.

Oh and there was just one itty bitty embarrassing moment (or so mommy says). I stole a treat off the table where they were doing free pet ID's. "Hmmmm. They look good! Have one? Don't mind if I do!". All the people there just laughed and thought it was so hilarious!

I'm a celebrity!!

Daddy just called mommy at work and told her that the magazine article that we have patiently awaiting has finally arrived!! I am sooooo excited!
The article is in the United Schutzhund Clubs of America (USA) magazine and is all about our Spring trial. It mentions that the "highlight" of the trial was ME!! Yippee! There is also a photo of mommy and me. Mommy said she can hardly wait to get home so that she can see the article and the photo. She is so very proud of me!

Next up....maybe our Schutzhund I in November!! I can hardly wait!

A pawsome day!!

I had a totally furiffic training day today.
I did an incredible job with tracking today. It was the very first time I did it in such high grass. It was knee deep for mommy. I did it all perfectly!

My retrieving wasn't the greatest...I keep spitting the dumbbell out. We're working on it. It won't take me long to figure it out! In fact my last few times doing it, I held on tight.

My obedience was perfect today. Total focus on mommy. My down stay was grrreat! Heeling was good too. I did really well even with all the distractions. Our training field was packed with people today.

My bitework was what really was the greatest! I am learning how to run blinds now! Yippee!!! I did a few other bites too that were just outstanding. I even managed to knock the helper down because I hit him so hard. They all said that I am a great dog!!!

That made our day! I am soooo proud of myself. Shutzhund I, here I come!!!!

I Did It!!!

We had a great day at our trials today!!!

All of our club members did very well. I and 4 other pups got our BH. One got a SchH 1. One pup got a SchH 2 (her handler is only 14!!!). And 2 pups got their SchH 3.

I did a grrrreat job!!! I was so excited when the judge announced that I passed the first part of my test that I jumped up and gave mommy a big hug and kisses!!! I put my pawtograph on her brand new club sweatshirt!!! And Sammy (another BH pup) pawtographed daddy's shirt!

Mommy was very nervous but I showed her that she had nothing to worry about.

And the judge made mommy smile really big when she said, "I understand you've only been doing this for 7 months...with a doberman...under 2 years old. My hat is off to you! And they say it can't be done!" Our TD and everyone in our club is super proud of mommy and me!!! Quite an accomplishment for a "newbie"!!
Next up...SchH 1!!! No problem!! BOL!

Can I do it???

Well, tomorrow is gonna be a huge day for mommy and me! Our training director at our Schutzhund club gave mommy the "green light" to let me compete in our trials tomorrow. This is going to be our first time doing anything like this.

Mommy is nervous already. She says that she gonna have Pepto and Imodium for breakfast tomorrow morning!! BOL!

We've been working really hard to try to get ready for this. It's gonna be a big day for me. I hope I pass! *Paws crossed*
