Arrival Story:
I guess Popeye was the product of a BYB, only I didn't know anything about BYB's then. We were out at a park concert one night & my mother saw these people who had this adorable cocker spaniel puppy. Knowing my love for cocker spaniels, she called me over. As I was gaaing & gooing over him, they told me he was the last (& the runt) of the litter & for sale. They called him Killer. My then, partner at the time, started waving the money around, saying my birthday was coming up & he was planning to take me on a hot air balloon ride but if I would prefer the puppy.... I thought as long as I possibly could at the time (as dog is a responsibility, not just cuteness), grabbed the money out of his hands, gave it to the people and the puppy came home with us. We brought him home and my mom had her dog Brutus with her and that's how we thought of the name "Popeye". The kids were still young so the name was just perfect & suited him perfectly.

In early March of 2006, I was giving Popeye his spring cut, when I noticed he was disappearing; meaning he had lost a lot of weight. It really wasn't as noticable under his winter coat and he seemed to be doing ok, other than his arthritis days. I quickly called the vet on Monday morning and we got him in the next day. By the end of the day, he was diagnosed with cancer. On Thursday, April 13th, 2006, we took Popeye for his last hike in Burnham Park. He was so weak, I had to carry him for the last part of it. When we got to the vet office, I insisted he walk in there with dignity. I think he knew what was happening. He did not want to go inside (for the first time EVER). I almost turned around & went home but I knew he was suffering so I did what I had to do and in we went. We all stayed with him until it was over and we all cried so much in there. I know Popeye knew he was loved and I know he's still with me today in so many ways.

Mommy was just going through some of Drew's old school stuff and found an old book of poetry from when he was really young.

In this book of poetry is a sonnet to me. Drew wrote it jus fur me!!

Popeye....A Sonnet

My dog's so cute
that thou can't compare thee;
Thou would not look good in a suit;
or is it just me?
I adore thou when thou chases the ball
and yet sometimes thou goes crazy;
thou also sleeps out in the hall
because thou is lazy.
Thou also play fights
and it's really fun;
All though thou does
bite me in the bum.
I love thou so much
That no one could take thou from my clutch.

It's been a year since we pawted and I know you still miss me, momma but it was my time and you knows it.

We had so much fun and brawt up 2 pawsome kids, if I do say so myself. I know I was a big help raisin' em; I tawt them a lot.

I like the spot wawe you put my ashes momma and it's in such a purty pot too. It's good you got it in a good spot away fwom the troll; I could just see you pickin me up wif the dustbuster, fightin Mollie off - BOL!!!

I know you'd love to have buried me in a bootiful spot, in the mountains if we still lived out there but momma, travelin is just in your blood and you knows it. This way you can still take me wherever you goes.

And I am still wif you, often but you also have Mollie too and she keeps you busy...pullin a hank. You member when I was pullin a hank? Better make sure her tags are on...

I will always love you, David & Andrew and of course my buddy, Tinky...

All my love,
