Arrival Story: We got Cosmo after seeing an ad in the paper. The puppies all looked so cute and we had recently lost our dear Duster, our first Golden boy (not pictured), due to natural causes. Husband picked the puppy with the most "personality" and that is what we got indeed! Cosmo came home to become buddies with our beloved Butch.
Bio: Cosmo was diagnosed with hip displaysia in both hips at eight months of age and received a total hip replacement on the worse one shortly after he turned one year of age. In April, 2004, he had TPLO knee surgery, fought a bacterial infection on the surgical site until August, 2004 (four months), and had three ear hematomas that had to be removed and stitched up like a quilt. An oral sarcoma was also discovered on his front jaw and after consulting with a specialist who wanted to remove part of his jaw, we did some research, listened to our hearts, and opted not to do anything aggressive and proceeded with his knee surgery. Our vet checks him regularly and he's been doing great for his age, four years later. Additionally, he had to put up with a pestering puppy named Quincy at the same time who was driving us all crazy by pulling off Cosmo's bandages, tugging at his e-collar, and putting holes in his protective bodysuit!!! Through all his mishaps, Cosmo never lost his spunk and positive attitude. As frustrating as it all was, it was his attitude that helped us get him through it. Cosmo loves going to see his vet and getting attention from everyone there. This is where the Cosmonator trait is at its best. He tries to drag us through the clinic and knocks things over with his wagging tail, and then he barks at the receptionists until they come over to pet him. Next, he insists on peeking around the corner where the exam rooms are, waiting for a technician to come get us, then drags us into the exam room.
Cosmo believes that everyone who comes to visit us at home comes just to see him! If you don't pet him and give him lots of attention you are in big trouble--he will become your velcro dog and bark at you until you do! When we have professional work done to the house, we have to explain to them that they will get a helper for free (sort of a requirement when we choose contractors).
He's so easygoing with our cats that when they sometimes use him as a stepping stool it doesn't even phase him. He was a handful as a pup but always a great dog!

I'm glad my parents are my parents, but I'm glad I don't have to make the decisions that they have to!
They had a very good conference call with my vet the other day. Everyone agreed that I will not have any kind of invasive surgery at my age. We know that we're not going to have my spleen removed, because even if I did, what about the spot on my lung and the growth in my mouth. So, it was decided that I won't even have an ultrasound done.
My parents don't want to put me through any kind of extensive treatment. I've always been somewhat of a hyper Golden, and even though an ultrasound may not be invasive, I don't like being put on my back, and if the results from that came with a diagnosis of cancer, I'm not getting radiation or chemotherapy.
I am eating good, getting short walks, and I still walk all the way up the stairs to tell my parents when they are late for my breakfast or that I need to go outside!
I will go back for physical exams and xrays periodically just to see how things are going.
What's important right now is that I continue to live a good quality of life, fed a good diet, am stress-free, and get lots of love!
Thank you to my pals who are always there for me. I love you all!
I just wanted to write an update on what the radiologist said when he looked at my xrays yesterday. He thinks I might have a mass on my spleen. They think I should have an ultrasound done so they can see more closely and decide if they are able to take an aspiration of the mass, if there is one, and that growth or whatever it is that they see on my lung.
My parents understand what this all means and they agree to the ultrasound, however, they all agreed we don't have to have it done immediately and that I could go back in a few weeks to have the xray series and other things repeated as planned. I could have the ultrasound done then as well.
It could turn out to be something or nothing, but I get overly excited when I go see the vet and one visit this past week was enough for me, so I can take a break.
One thing at a time. My parents have already thought some things through. They respect vets and specialists, but they will always make decisions based on what they believe is in my best interest because they know me best.
Please understand I am not acting sick in any way, and the last thing my parents want to do is give me any negative vibes. My legs may be crookedy, but I am still living the good life.
I had a senior wellness x-ray exam on Monday! They took films of my chest, heart, and hips. My heart looks normal, and my hip replacement from years ago looks fine, but they saw a small mass on my lung. A radiologist will look at my x-rays this Thursday so we will see what he says.
I need to go back in a month for a blood test to check my thyroid levels anyway, so unless something else comes up after the radiologist looks at my x-rays, I will have a repeat of the x-ray exam.
I'm being limited to brief walks, especially in the heat, but that is okay with me cuz' I'm in the house most of the time anyway. I'll let Quincy get the extra walks and report back to me while I hang out with the cats!
