Arrival Story: Heidi is a beautiful black Lab/Golden cross breed pup. She is an assistance puppy in training and is owned by Canine Companions for Independence (CCI).
http://www.caninecompanions.org/
She was born in California & made her first trip via jetliner at the tender age of nine weeks when she came to live with us in Virginia. She loves playing in water and is really good with our other two dogs.
Heidi has now entered advanced training at CCI Northeast HQ on Long Island. It was a bittersweet day when we turned her in. Of course, we have all the highest hopes for her success, but there's always that question in the back of our minds. All we can do now is hope for the best in the next six months. The trainers at CCI are top notch and they can bring out the best a dog has to offer. Good luck Heidi, we miss you!
Well, after only one month in advanced training Heidi was found to be unsuitable as a service dog. She was released for a couple of reasons, both of which we had noticed earlier. But we were hopeful the wonderful trainers at CCI could work with her. They tried, but it didn't work out.
So now she's living with a wonderful young family near us. They have 2 boys, 11 and 14 years old with lots of energy to go with Heidi's personality. They are just nuts about her and she's just as crazy about them, so it looks like a good match.
We plan to raise another CCI pup next spring, so watch for another "Dogster" page then.

Bio: We raised Heidi's half-brother, Mercer, a couple of years ago and he's now a graduate working dog. We can see many similarities in the personalities of the two dogs & we're looking forward to having another wonderful experience raising Heidi. So far she hasn't disappointed us. Hassie, Harlow & Hopkins are 3 of Heidi's 8 littermates. You can visit their pages by clicking their pictures below. NOTE: You can see Heidi & Mercer meeting for the first time 8/08/04. They got along nicely. Mercer always was fond of the little pups. See more of Mercer at www.walkforshea.com Another picture shows Heidi at Myrtle Beach, SC, where she saw the ocean for the first time in November, '04. She was entranced with the waves & the shorebirds. We sure had lots of fun!
As you can see by the close-up shot, Heidi is now very grown-up looking, and beautiful. She's beginning to show signs of becoming a mature dog, serious about her upcoming career. Time will tell, but we're very hopeful. She's so nice!
The picture of Heidi & I in front of the TV is the night of the Westminster Kennel Club dog show. She loved it but was sad the Golden or Lab didn't win. She also loved the "Puppy Bowl" on Animal Planet the day of the NFL Super Bowl. There is a picture is of Heidi with Dr. Marty Becker of Good Morning America, taken at a fund raising event for CCI in Washington, DC. Thanks Dr. Becker! You can see Heidi with a turtle she discovered in our yard. She was so curious about it! What fun. The latest picture shows Heidi when she met "McGruff, the Crime Dog", at a neighborhood event recently. She gave him a big kiss on his nose, as you can see. She's such a sweet dog.
